I was reading a thread earlier, I believe it was the ultimate re-draft, and one of the sub-topics had to be it’s own thread.

Within the all-time ranks, who would you place higher: Tim Duncan or Hakeem Olajuwon? Holy crap.. what a close call.

I have always had a soft spot for Hakeem. Just watching him play was an absolute thing of beauty, and I was a 9 year old Orlando Magic fan when I watched him toy with Shaq in the 1994-95 NBA finals like nobody else ever had. His combination of post moves, touch, and dominant defensive abilities were insane.

Duncan is the ultimate franchise player. Not flashy or freakishly athletic, but consistently dominant on both ends of the floor. His 2002-2003 playoff run when he won his 2nd title (Averaged 25/15/3.5blks over 24 games) is arguably one of the best individual stretch of postseason games for a post player in NBA history. Just an incredible performance. 

Career Stats:

Hakeem the Dream — 22pts, 11rebs, 2.5assists, 1.7stls, 3.1blks, 51%fg, 71%ft

• Best Season IMO (1992-93) — 26pts, 13rebs, 3.5assists, 1.8stls, 4.2blks

Timmay — 19pts, 11rebs, 3.0assists, 0.7stls, 2.2blks, 50%fg, 70%ft

•  Best Season IMO (2001-2002) — 25pts, 13rebs, 3.7assists, 0.7stls, 2.5blks

*Statistically speaking they are super comparable over the course of their entire career, with Hakeem having the slight edge. Who ya got??

 it depends what’s your priorities.

At his peak I think Olajuwon was slightly better, but to built a team around much a consistent play a super long winning during his career it’s offcourse Duncan.

overall in my own alltime ranks Timmy would be like two spots higher

 Hakeem from 92-95 was probably better than Duncan was at any point in his career. That 95 playoff run where he dominated shaq and David Robinson was legendary and probably as good as any play we’ve ever seen at the center position. Unfortunately, age and injuries took their toll and he was never the same after that. He didn’t age gracefully and wasn’t really able to reinvent himself as the ultimate role player the way Duncan did ( although to be fair he didn’t have the luxury of playing his entire career for a coach like popovich).

Hakeem also had attitude issues early in his career and even though he put up great stats wasn’t really considered a great teammate or leader until he matured. Just based on his overall consistency throughout his career, in a redraft I would have to go with Duncan. If I had to choose between the 2 at their absolute peak for just one season though, probably Hakeem.

Overall talent, I’d say Hakeem was better, but if you’re taking career accomplishments into consideration (which you have to) then you have to give an edge to Duncan, though it’s very slight. Both are top 11 players all time in my opinion.

But at the same time, timmy won way earlier in his career, kinda cruise control since he’s 30(mins, FGA), he already had 4 titles when hakeem had to wait on MJ to play baseball…

Timmy with 100+ PO games on hakeem, 2 time MVP, 3 time finals MVP, 10 time 1st team all nba. 19 str8 seasons with 50+ wins for the spurs, 1100+ wins in his career, it’s difficult to ignore.

Duncan broke my heart on numerous occasions but he would be my 7th all time, hakeem 9th, if you’re the 4th all time C, you shouldn’t be 8th all time overall, IMO…

Also that championship Houston team is that one team you can say was carried by one player. Everything revolved around Hakeem then and the rest were really role players (even Drexler). Usually we see championship teams have at least 2 superstars, sometimes 3. That team Hakeem led was the only team with only one STAR.
