The more the years pass, the more foreign players we see in the NBA.  We’ve also seen the NBA get much softer and we’ve see more flops than ever before.

My question: Is the addition of more foreign basketball players into the league make it softer and make flopping more accepted?

Take a look at the NBA’s biggest floppers:

    • Jose Barea
    • Raja Bell
    • Carlos Delfino
    • Derek Fisher
    • Manu Ginobili
    • Andrei Kirilenko
    • Andres Nocioni
    • Dirk Nowitzki
    • Fabricio Oberto
    • Paul Pierce
    • Luis Scola
    • Hedo Turkoglu
    • Anderson Varejao
    • Sasha Vujacic

Most of them are foreign players.  Is it just me, or are most foreign players floppers?

There was a lot of flopping in college basketball this year.  Its’ not just European players, a lot more players are sliding in and taking charges than they were in the late 90’s(except Rodman) and the 2000’s.  I don’t know if it’s a mind set or something coaches are bringing back, but theres a lot more of it now than there has been in the past decade.  Almost a throwback to the 80’s, but you could also foul harder and hand check back then so the fact that a lot more players took charges didn’t make the game seem soft.

Vlade is the man. I am a smaller player, 6 foot, but my favorite thing to do is rebound. I flop alot and try to use my small size to my advantage by boxing out and flopping a little if someone trys to go over my back. Vlade is probably a big inspiration to the way I play. Vlade, if you get on NBADraft.net, I just want to let you know that you are the truth… and the guy that calls himself the truth aka paul pierce u r a baller, but also a faker. I remember that Lakers game. Hilarious wheelchair to running on court in 3 minutes. haha

    Kobe Bryant?

    Shane Battier?

    Jarron Collins?

Also, there’s a difference between flopping and drawing charges. Personally, I think a player is soft if he DOESN’T try to draw fouls by exaggerating contact and establishing position directly in front of a 6’10" 280 lbs athlete running full speed in a straight line.

Going off of what JoeWolf said, Dennis Rodman and John Stockton were undeniably two of the toughest players in the NBA. They were also two of the biggest floppers and neither one was foreign.

So, no. Foreign basketball players and flopping are not making the NBA soft.

Nick Collison is a great example of a guy who doesn’t flop but draws a hecking load of charges.
