The NBA needs needs needs to do something about the flopping issue in todays game for next season. League officials should be able to go back to film after the game to look at plays and if they find that a player has flopped the player should be, at the very least, fined. This Spurs – Thunder series displayed great basketball players in great offensive schemes, but it also had A LOT of flopping. It’s so common in the NBA now and it’s unbelievably frustrating as a fan. Management needs to address this issue. The Spurs, Thunder, and Heat are the worst offenders and it’s being rewarded! Players should be fined and repeat offenders should be suspended. I know I’m not the only one who believes this.

The things is in real time it is hard to see who is flopping or not.  I think the ocassionaly no call when so one falls on the floor should be adequate for now because a lot of time that is a easy 2 points.

Both of you are right.  This issue:

    (1) Flopping is hurting the game.

    (2) It’s often impossible to tell if it’s a flop during a game.

The key in my opinion is to fine players for flopping after the fact and have the penalty increase all the way up to suspensions for repeat offenders.  A deterrent like this would impact flopping.

Basketball is supposed to be a contact sport, if they dont like the physicality play chess then. The league should review plays especially flops and or non-calls AFTER the game has finished. Hefty fines and suspensions should be given to floppers. I miss the late 80s to 90s defense in which physical play was ok.

Also, NBA Referees should be evaluated weekly even those of veteran status. Alot of missed/wrong/bogus calls have destroyed the game. Incapable referees should be suspended.

Agreed. Flopping is not part of the game when we play it in the park, it shouldn’t be part of the game in the NBA. It clearly has become so though. The league needs to create a penalty for it. It is hard to figure out but if a penalty for flopping was created, then players wouldn’t do it as much. We could have something where the league reviews tapes for a flop and bans the player for one game if they detect one. That would elimiante the situation where a guy fakes getting hit in the face because that can be caught on hi-def replay. Getting that stuff out of the game would at least be a step in the right direction. Even if you just nailed a few guys a season, if the penalty was rough like missing a game, then players wouldn’t try to fake and flop just to get a foul call. Foul call versus missing a game doesn’t even up, so players won’t flop if they are risking an entire game.

People on this forum are wayyyy too hard on refs. Basketball without a doubt is the hardest sport to referee in the world.  We see it 4 times on replay in slow motion, referees have a split second with ridiculous athletes flying onto each other, and for the most part they do a good job.  They have done a good job in these playoffs bar that one Miami/Celtics game (either 3 or 4 cant remember).  Would like to see some people who constantly criticize them even try to keep up with the speed of the NBA.

Agreed its not easy for the refs, outside of the bad techs they do a good job for the most part.

Wish they could figure out a way to know if a player was in the restricted area when drawing a foul w/out interrupting the game too.  Replays has helped at the end of games and qtrs a lot.

Trying to figure out if someone is flopping isn’t easy.  NBA needs to fine players and maybe if you hit a certain number of flops you get suspended too.

flopping provides a way for a player who isn’t as gifted as another to make a play because he is playing smarter.  Flopping is annoying and cheap but it is also smart basketball, if flopping was made illegal like you suggest their would be many current nba players that wouldn’t have a chance to stay in the league because they wouldn’t be able to contribute anything on defense.  Flopping has gotten worse over time but it has been in the game forever and it’s here to stay.
