marcusfizer212008-09 Season was a cinderella dream for the city of Cleveland and its fans. No other Cleveland team has had this success since the Browns won the NFL title back in the 60’s. Since then, it has been pure turmoil for the city of Cleveland. The Cavs were a joke who always get humiliated in the NBA especially during the reign of a certain guy named Michael Jordan. Jordan would make this team a victim of buzzer beaters and clutch plays. Guys like Craig Ehlo, Ron Harper and Gerald Wilkins get torched by the Airness. This season would be a joyride throughout for the team ever since acquiring a guy like Mo Williams to compliment King James and the team. From a so-so campaign last year to a dominating regular season, the Cavaliers were unbeatable especially at home where they went 39-2, almost tying the Celtics of 85-86 to the best home court record in history. LeBron James was ever as dominant as before. His game transitioned better with a lot of supporting cast ready to take on their roles. Anderson Varejao was open, Big Z would make shots when healthy, Delonte West was pesky and Mo Williams, who had his fisrt All-Star selection this year, was giving LBJ a sort-of partnership he needed. It was one of the most underrated moves that off-season but when it came down to playing it, they were suddenly praised. What made the Cavs even more interesting was the re-acquisition of former top pick-turned role/solid player in Joe Smith. Average Joe was who LeBron wanted late last season. The Cavaliers clinched home court advantage throughout the playoffs with the best record in the NBA at 66-16. There were many celebrations and daily routines from the team which some considered as too much relaxing on their part. The Cavaliers marched onto the playoffs with ease picked up easy series sweeps against the weaker Detroit Pistons in the 1st round and the injury-plagued Atlanta Hawks in the second round. And with LeBron James leading the way and winning the MVP award that season, many expected them to win the championship but to the surprise of some, the Orlando Magic would spoil the supposed-to-be coronation for the Cleveland franchise who has been hungry for the last 40 years. Dwight Howard and company would expose the Cavaliers interior weakness and they went on to beat the Cavaliers in 6 games leaving LeBron devastated and aghasted. He refused to talk and shake hands with anyone thus creating rumors about it. It was a tough loss for whom many people expect to win or be even present in the Finals. The Cavaliers now know that it isn’t easy to make it there. Not even if they have the best coach of the year or their best player. It takes a lot of effort and a lot of focus to make it their and they didn’t have enough to make it. The drafts they had last year were solid like JJ Hickson and Darnell Jackson. The Cavaliers have been known for finding silver in the land of garbage. They had great knack for finding solid contributors in the second round. Guys like Boobie Gibson and Jackson are examples of such. This year wasn’t quite that much in weak 2009 draft. The 30th pick was used to draft a relative unknown project in Christian Eyenga whereas they could have taken Sam Young, DeJuan Blair or DeMarre Carroll. It was definitely a head scratcher for many fans. The second round picks prove to be quite interesting since the Cavs drafted defensive specialist Danny Green, who recently won the NCAA title with UNC. Could he be another steal in the 2nd round? Who knows. The Cavaliers also made some terrific acquisition this offseason, most notably the arrival of Big Shaq. Shaq has quoted that he is here “to win the ring for The King.” But at his age, people are starting to wonder if he still has something left to play. The Cavaliers made 2 underrated moves which could be an upgrade over some of their players. The first one was the signing of Anthony Parker. He will defnitely be an upgrade over Wally Sczerbiak who showed no worth of his $13 Million Dollar contract. The Cavs also made solid strides in acquiring Jamario Moon who could help spell LBJ off the floor with his great athleticism and length. These are two solid pick-ups from the already contending Eastern champs. Adding Leon Powe to the mix makes them deeper than ever. So you tell me, Is this the year that the Cavaliers will win the title? With these supporting cast, will the franchise be able to convince LeBron to stay? or will he move somewhere else? It’s tough to think that LBJ would start all over again on another team but it is a possibility. A lot of questions that can be answered only as the season comes through but defintely, the city of Cleveland will be hoping for another Cinderella story which they hope could finally have a happy ending.
