rtbtParticipantEveryone can debate the pros and cons of who can make it in the NBA and that’s truly interesting. I know I’ve been impressed by a number of European players. But there’s something else about the European game I found intriguing. One of the first differences I noticed was the complete lack of TV timeouts.
Unlike the American game, the only time the action stops is when a team uses 1 of their 2 timeouts per half. I think that’s the correct number, at least that’s what I heard the announcer say.
More importantly, the action is continuous, almost soccer like and I love it. That’s very different from American college basketball where they stop the game every 4 minutes for a series of never ending commercials.

doubledribblerParticipantThe lack of tv timeouts is great. I think it’s a big part of the game here because of all the money that comes in from sponsorship. I’ve played in games with tv timeouts and it’s horrible. It’s a big change in momentum. I also like that the international game allows more contact. You don’t see a bunch of touch fouls, especially on the perimeter. It decreases scoring, but it lets people actually get down and defend. Last, but not least, I love that you can play a real zone. If a team or player can’t shoot you can take him out of the game. It forces players to be more skilled offensively. I wish we could combine the athleticism of the NBA with FIBA rules and I think we would have a much more purer game. I want to keep the 82 game schedule though…can’t get enough games.

bobbybParticipanti love that there are no touch fouls and fouls stay on the floor, no contination if you arent in the act of shooting. Also no defensive 3 seconds. It is so hard to enforce in the nba it probably happens like 20 times a game and they call it like 3 times, might as well scrap the rule. Every other level of basket ball allows a defender to defend the paint

rtbtParticipantExcellent points from both of you, thanks.
I also noticed the refs don’t call fouls when players flop.
And today, they called numerous illegal screens and every one was an excellent call. In the NBA, guys like Kendrick Perkins batter defenders while moving, leaning, and doing everything they can to physically knock over a defender. The NBA’s lack of enforcement on illegal screens is horrendous. This is yet another reason why I love the FIBA game.
But no matter what else we come up with, the lack of those idiotic TV Timeouts is the best and most important difference.

stanford hoopsThat’s because euro teams don’t make the stacks of money that the NBA makes off of tv timeouts. Think if you were a NBA team owner and nike asked to pay you 500,000 for a 3min slot. And that’s just one commercial. As a fan I rather have no commercials since I’m not getting a chinch of that money lol

rtbtParticipantIt’s just the opposite. One would think since FIBA revenues are so much lower than the NBA, they would want to cram as many commercials into the game as possible. However, they took the opposite track, the high road. There are zero TV Timeouts in FIBA games, so unlike American basketball, the emphasis is actually on basketball.
Way to go FIBA!

joecheck88Participanti think its obvious that both sets of rules have their pros and cons. what i like about fiba is that they arent to proud to make changes in their game. very soon they will be getting rid of the trapezoid lane in favor of the nba lane(including the half circle for charges) and will be extending the 3pt line to slightly shorter than nba 3. i also like the rule where u can tip the ball of the rim though i dont think this would work as well in the nba with the athletes we have(less scoring and the nba doesnt want that). i love how free flowing fiba is, less timeouts and less foul calling. i know the timeouts in the nba bring in alot of money(college too) but if we could shave 1 or 2 timeouts from each game i think it would only make it a more exciting game. and dont get me started on nba fouls. there are too soft of fouls called too often in the nba. let these guys play.

rtbtParticipanttrinajoe, I agree with your comment. I don’t expect the U.S. to adopt the FIBA no TV Timeout philosophy, but reducing the number would work.
For example, in the NCAA, they stop the game an insane number of times. There are TV Timeouts every 4 minutes plus each team has way too many timeouts. I think they should reduce the TV Timeouts from 4 to 3 per half and eliminate one team timeout.
That would mean instead of 8 TV Timeouts per game, we would have 6 which would help the game flow more consistently.

joecheck88Participantya, i wish american basketball would make improvements on all levels of competition. but we have an attitude that almost seems like we have the best and there is no need for change. changes i would like to see made.
hs- implement a shot clock, doesnt have to be 24 seconds but a 30 second shot clock i think would help make players more decisive on the fly. keep the 3pt line where it is.
college- bring the shot clock down to 24 seconds. this will speed the game up some and help kids coming from high school make the transition faster. extend the 3pt line back about a foot or foot and a half. i think this would only help players learn to take better shots and maybe put a little more emphasis on weight training(i was a horrible shooter but with strength came better form because i didnt have to get the ball to the rim, i can now just let it fly). also cut the tv timeouts like was said. i think these would help make college even more exciting to watch.
nba- they are pretty good when it comes to the rules. i wish they would let some of the touch fouls go( small bumps 5 feet outside the 3pt line, fighting for post position). and take 1 full time out and make it another 20. alot of times, the timeouts are called for quick plays at the end of a quarter and the player shouldnt need the rest.
all in all, basketball is a great sport at all levels but lets make subtle changes. we dont have to be perfect but there is nothing wrong with getting better.

rtbtParticipanttrinajoe, here are my suggestions:
NBA
——-
1. Return to a 70 game season for several reasons.
Wear and Tear on player’s bodies plus injuries
Too many meaningless games in April2. Call palming, traveling, and moving screens
3. Go to a 30 second clockNCAA
———
1. Reduce TV Timeouts from 4 to 3 per half
2. Do away with the stupid “One and Done” system.0 - Posted on: Thu, 09/09/2010 - 6:16am #397462

ghettosermonParticipantAnother thing I like in FIBA rules is the lack of technical fouls. Let guys show emotions, get upset if they feel so. In the NBA you can get a T for simply looking at the ref in the wrong way. The FIBA refs are what refs are supposed to be, officials on the side, sometimes when I watch NBA games I feel like the refs are fighting for T.V. time along with the players.

stanford hoopsI agree I love the lack of techs. I also love how they call travel unlike the NBA where you’re allowed to take 3 steps

knicksfan7ParticipantYou know I am so used to watching the game, that it never crosses my mind how little stoppages their are during the game until you guys mentioned it. What I like about FIBA is the lack of ticky-tacky fouls aka Super-Star calls. The FIBA refs call the game w/o being incredibly bias. Stronger contact, watching the games has been breath of fresh air.

rtbtParticipantknicksfan7, it appears that watching games without those idiotic, non-stop TV Timeouts made you realize how much fun basketball can be if you allow the players to just play the game.
I hope more Americans are coming to that same realization.

rtbtParticipantknicksfan7, would you agree that stopping the game every 4 minutes during an NCAA contest ruins the flow of the game, often breaking momentum, while helping teams that don’t have a good bench?
