With all the Utah rumours about trading Favours and the 5th for Cavs No.1 I wanted to bring this up.
Why do people seem to rate him SO much higher?

They are both the same age, Thompson marginally older by less then 100 days.

Thompson does have one year less in the league and one year less experience

    2013-14 stats

    Thompson: MIN 31.6 FG% .477 PPG 11.7. RPG 9.2, APG 0.9, BLK 0.4 STL 0.5

    Favors: MIN 30..2 FG% .522% PPG 13.3 RPG 8.7 APG 1.2 BLK 1.5 STL 1

Now, I do agree he is the better player. If I had to pick one now, I would pick Favors. He is a bigger blocking threat and has good size. Offensively I think they are tied in impact offensively, both still really raw, but from watching Cavs games I do like Thompsons progression. Favors is much more effeicient though, and Thompson gets blocked way to easily.

Thompson is a monster on the rebounds though. Especially on the offensive glass. He is traditionally under sized, however, in this day and age 6-8 and 6-9 is not a big issue, especially with his great athleticism.

So, I do think Favors is necessarily is that much bigger of an upgrade over Thompson. which this trade would do. You don’t trade down from No.1 to just to get a player who will not start or is an upgrade over an existing player.

In addition, you could argue they would play together? A Thompson, Favours front court would be a disaster. both struggling to be a consistent threat in the post, would just clog the lane up for Kyrie and Dion.

Cavs also have Bennet at PF, so I am not really sure what trading for another big men is saying about their faith in him. Cavs also have Andy V who is a fan favourite and every cavs support will want to see him get solid minutes.

So basically, in summary, a trade for favors although a slight upgrade, is just not making the best use of assets and picks.

Favors is the better player right now, and he also has the higher ceiling of the two.  The reason that Favors is rated as so much better than Tristan Thompson is that he is believed to slide over to the center position, which is a position that the Cleveland Cavaliers desperately need to improve on.  He is an excellent shot blocker, a good defensive big in the post, and he has the frame and potential to improve offensively.

His rebounding numbers may have not been as high as Thompson’s, but Thompson was playing next to guys who aren’t elite rebounders.  Favors played next to Kanter a lot this past season, and one of Kanter’s best attributes is rebounding the basketball.

With Anthony Bennett waiting to step up, him and Derrick Favors would fit nicely together, considering Bennett is a stretch-four.  Imagine a lineup of Kyrie-Burks-Draft Pick-Bennett-Favors.  That is a very intriguing young lineup, with a ton of potential to grow as a young unit in Cleveland.

These are all points I agree with you on, however, that pick 5 isn’t going to net Cavs their future SF. And this is my exact point. At pick 5 drafting Hood would be a reach, Gordon is not a SF, and McDermott at 5 is another reach.

The benefits of a Favours/Bennet front court are not as good as the benefits of Wiggins as your SF rather then Doug or Hood.

I would rather Kyrie-Dion-Wiggins/Parker-Bennet-TT-Hawes. I really want them to re-sign Hawes. They could start ether Andy V at the Centre or play both TT and Bennet, with Andy V off the bench. If Hawes does not re sign they will need to sign another C in the FA.

Interesting post and you should repost it. But immediatly the jazz got rid of a cancer on the team but frankly have have been terrible since.  Favors and Kanter have real talent and are enable the Jazz to have some flexability right now.  Instead, the nets have little flexability.  So overall team health, it has been better for the Jazz.  The only 2nd rounder that has stuck in recent years for the jazz (like 2-3) is Jeremy Evens.  I don’t think he has been a real deal sweetener though he has been fun to watch (when not getting beasted on defense).  But Kanter and Favors for Williams, think about it now.  Now way I trade Favors and Kanter for Williams.

I dont think he is worth passing up Wiggins or Parker for. He is much better than Thompson in my opinion though. Thompson might get more rebounds per game, but Favors plays with better rebounders and in a much better conference. If Favors was in the East I could easily see all his stats raising. Favors is a better shot blocker and efficient scorer. I just dont think he is worth passing up Wiggins. This is coming from somebody who has seen almost every cavs game.

Favors’ main strength is on the defensive end of the floor. And he plays in a tougher conference and played with a coach who never ran a play for him. And he’s still a more efficient scorer than Thompson. He’s an absolute beast in the pick and roll. He does all the little things you’d like to see out of a young big. He’s a much, much better player than you’re giving him credit for.

Not saying I disagree at all but let’s not forget that Thompson played for Mike Brown who doesn’t call plays for anybody.  I don’t think it would matter in Thompsons case but I just couldn’t pass up a shot to bad mouth Mike Brown.

Favors played for Ty Coburn, so I’d say it’s a wash.

The impact of Favors goes beyond the statistics. It’s about how rim-protecting bigs change the game for their team.

This past finals is the perfect case in point. Finishing at the rim was extremely tough for San Antonio – both because the activity of their defense, but also because ultimately they were being ushered towards Duncan and tried to make difficult finishes. Forget what impact it had on Duncan specifically in terms of blocks or boards, it’s about how much better the team is defensively with him on the court.

Some guys who block a lot of shots do it while selling out on D, hence have a lesser impact on their team’s defensive rating. Guys like Tyson Chandler block just over a shot per game but have a huge impact.

Guys like Bosh, while giving great effort this past season and actually being a substantial positive to the Heat’s team D, still don’t give you that rim protector quality. It’s why SA was able to shoot at such a high clip this past Finals (aside from their ball movement, shooting etc).

Having a big who doesn’t provide that quality is a liability, especially a guy like Thompson who will often have to slide over to C and be the principal big on D increasingly in today’s small ball NBA. If you can’t defend the basket, you have to at the least have one differenciating skill – ie: be a very effective offensive weapon (think David West, younger Boozer), have the ability to stretch the floor (Ryan Anderson, Channing Frye), or be a rebounding/hustle machine (Reggie Evans? Kris Humphries? Rodman!).

What does Thompson bring to the table? A matchup liability against most PF’s in the league, and a cog which doesn’t fit particuarly well in any offense or defense.
