I’m excited for this! After paying dues as an assistant in the NBA, Ewing is finally getting his shot. As a Georgetown fan and alum, I know this will really excite the fanbase and generate increased interest in games. I can also see how Ewing could be a huge deciding factor for elite big men during recruiting. If you’re a top PF/C prospect, who better to learn from at the college level?

As a fun little subplot, Ewing and Chris Mullin were big rivals in college and now both are the only HOFers currently coacing their alma mater. Adds a bit of hype to when Georgetown and St John’s play each other next year.

My one reservation is that I could see stories like that and others overshadowing the team itself. If this team doesn’t meet expectations early, those kids are going to be pestered constantly with questions about the ability of their coach. Could be a distraction. Obviously one Georgetown is willing to take.

This is a great hire on so many levels, Georgetown will be in good hands with Ewing as the HC.. John Thompson Jr still has a ton of influence on the program and definitely got the guy he wanted.. I see Ewing emulating that father figure role for his players which made Thompson a Success..

Can’t wait for when my Johnnies play the Hoyas this year. Mullin vs. Ewing rematch. If there’s not a fist fight between these two for old time sake I’m going to be disappointed. But joking aside seems like a good hire, but ultimately I think his success will ride upon the staff he puts around him.

schools that hire alums to be coach usually don’t have great results.  Mainly because their ex-players are not the best available coach.  Does anyone remember Matt Doherty at UNC?  Schools like to hire old players because it is easier to recruit/negotiate with an ex-player, and fans usually love it.  But a big-time program like Georgetown could have had almost anyone.  Nepotism (Thompson jr) dis not get Gtown very far.  And now hiring an old player is prob not gonna get it done either.  If you are a major college program in a desirable city, with a tradition of winning,  you can get the best.  I liked Ewing as an NBA player, and he might be an OK coach but Gtown could have had anyone.  They settled and I think that is going to prove to be a mistake.

I agree to an extent for majority of the time that’s correct but I think this is a great signing. It’s not like Ewing is just thrown in as the head coach with no experience. Ewing has put in his time to get to where he is now with being an assistant coach for the past 15 years.

Pat was a great player and has been and Assistant or Associate HC in the NBA since he retired. He is widely regarded as a very good developer of big men having done good work with Yao and D12 amongst others. But he has never got the nod for an NBA Head Coaching Role, I don’t know why he has been overlooked given his stellar playing career and solid resume as an NBA assistant.

But the offer of lead job at his old college was too tempting to turn down and no doubt he wants a new challenge. His assistant Kevin Broadus is considered a very good recruiter and I’d figure any good young big will certainly have G-Town on their list of possible locations from now on.

It will be interesting to see how he goes, I hope he does well.

Ewing has paid his dues. He has done the work. He has put in the time. I am glad he is getting good this opportunity.   But that doesn’t mean I think he will be a good coach. But I hope I am proven wrong.
