I know that everyone likes to compare Evan Turner to Brandon Roy all the time, but am I the only person that thinks his game is similar to Penny Hardaway. He may not be as flashy but he has all the same skills and their stats as juniors are kind of close: Evan Turner- 19.7 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 5.9 apg, 1.9 spg; Penny Hardaway 22.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 6.4 apg, 2.4 spg. They are both 6’7″ 210-220 lbs and are more than capable of playing point guard due to the incredible ball handling, court vision, and willingness to pass the ball.

*Note: Both player had 2 triple doubles in their junior year also/

He could be Grant Hill without injuries (hopefully). I thought if Grant Hill never fell victim to injuries, he could have been one of the greats of all-time.

You can always count on Quincey for a down-to-Earth comparison.

Salmons is a pretty good comparison actually… I see the similarities.

I have seen a lot of people compare him to Penny/ Hill/ Pippen. Those are lofty expectations but I would be willing to bet he ends up better than John Salmons. I wouldn’t use a 2nd overall pick on John Salmons. Evan will average more than 3reb and 2.4 ast for his career.

salmons at his best was putting up something in the ballpark of 18 5 reb 5 ast..nice numbers. its easy to say in hindsite you wouldnt pick salmons that high just like kwame or guys ahead of roy or guys ahead of millsap

I hate the Penny Hardaway comparison, evan turner is a great athlete but we have to remember before penny got hurt, he was one of the most athletic players in the leage especially in the quickness department. I like that salmons comparision, but i think he will be better than salmons, i’m saying at worst, Bobby sura at best Playoff Manu Ginobili. I mean I’m stuck on Manu and jamal crawford. I ultimately think brandon roy is better and will be better.

yeah most would say he could be better since he is younger and we have already seen how good salmons is. liekmost would say some freshman in hs who is very very good could be better then a allconference future nba guy in college. and the perry jones kd comparision was absurd. i remember someone saying that before. my guess is they havnt watched perry in hs or kd when he was in hs. there skill sets are pretty different

When was Salmons putting up 18-5-5? Turner can run the point and rebound very well, Salmons can’t. And as far as hindsight, Salmons was drafted in the 20’s, so what hindsight? I wouldn’t have taken him 2nd then and I wouldn’t take him 2nd now. I just don’t see enough similarities in their game to warrant a comparison.

He plays like Penny and Hill, but again, those are lofty comparisons. I think a player should be compared to another player that has some semblance of their game.

hindsit being you already know what salmons can do…and to be honest we dont know if he can play the point in the nba. salmon played alot of point in college as well and was considered a combo type guard. those comparisions are alot more realistic then a penny or scottie. he could end up like any three of those guys

with sac salmons was avg 18 4ast 4reb. right now putting up 20 3 and 3 with the bucks .from what i have read from what peopel think turners numbers will be those are very similar to what ive been reading.. most say around 17-20 with 3-5reb and 4-6ast

I watched him the whole time he was with the Bulls, he can’t play the point. He doesn’t have the court vision to do so. If Evan Turner ended up having a John Salmons career then he would be considered a bust in my opinion. Especially if he went 2nd overall and with the talent level he has.

and youre more then welcome to youre opinion. i could never think a guy putting up those numbers a bust. as far as salmons and turner. i watched salmons in college and just liek turner he looked like he could play some point int he nba. we dont know if turner can play point in the nba. we know he can play it in college just like we knew salmons could play it in college. nba is a whole different ball game which is why i mentioned hinesite. its easy to say turner can play point better then salmons in the nab because we have already seen salmons try to play point in the nba. i could say cousins will be a much better rebounder then lee say……a pf who’s averaging 8reb a game because of how great of a rebounder he is in college. but one thing id have to keep in mind is thats college and the nba is awhole different ball game

Evans is not going to somehow lose his court vision when he gets to the NBA. He wouldn’t be projected to go 2nd by most if they thought his game wouldn’t translate to the NBA. From everything I have read, he has the most NBA ready game. Salmons would have went a lot higher if scouts thought he was more versatile.

I am not saying Salmons is a bad player or that Evan will have success in the likes of Penny and Hill. What I am saying is that if Evan ends up with career numbers like Salmons, He would be considered somewhat of a bust for going 2nd overall.

And thank you, I will keep in mind that college and the NBA is a whole different ballgame. I didn’t realize that.

Notes: John Salmons is widely regarded as one of the most versatile players to ever play at Miami. A four-year starter, Salmons started 107 consecutive games — the second-longest streak in school history. He leaves as UM’s 13th-leading scorer with 1,287 points and third on both the all-time assists (433) and steals (192) lists. Salmons in the only Miami player to ever record 50 or more steals in three straight seasons and is the first player in UM history to surpass 1,000 career points, 600 rebounds (687), 400 assists and 150 steals (192).
Salmons led Miami to an 86-39 record during his four seasons, establishing a school record for wins in a four-year period. He was named second-team All-Big East in 2002 after starting all 32 games at point guard, but playing every position on the floor except center.

Positives: Scouts love Salmon’s size for his position. He’s a scorer and a slasher. He played the point and off guard and can play small forward, too. Salmon is one of the most versatile seniors in the draft. He didn’t star at Portsmouth, but he was good enough to get noticed once again.

Negatives: Salmons is not a pure shooter nor is he a pure point. While the combo guard can be attractive to some teams, others want a pure position player. He’s the type of player who could go in the second round or undrafted and end up lasting a long time in the league.

Summary: Salmons is likely in the second round with an outside shot at the first round if he is impressive in workouts. He has a chance to move up through a stellar Chicago

Lets simmer down buddy, there is nothing to this comparison. Turner will be a better all around player but scoring wise, and handles NEVER will be jamal crawford. One of the last of the cross over era of the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

Playing point has helped turner but as weak as the league is getting talent wise, I dont see why he couldnt average 18 6 and 5 in 3 years. Look at stephon curry,,,,,,,If nellie isnt the best coach for number pats I dont know who is,, he gets anyone to score. Case in point the center from michigan hunter…. He looked good playing, I think nellie can plug anyone in and make them score

Anthony Randolph Where are you ?????????????

Good comparison, but if Turner learns to be a post up player instead overdribbling off the dribble

I think he can put up similar numbers to Penny Hardaway despite the quickness advantage Penny had

Turner will be a slow it down and break you down off the dribble
halfcourt player while Hardaway was a fast break virtuoso

    just my prediction

All of those stats are great but like Quincey said, college is a whole different ballgame.

If he was versatile enough, in scouts eyes of course, to play the point in the NBA then he would have went a lot higher then where he was drafted. Clearly he just wasn’t good enough, and they were right.

Salmons was all 2nd Big East, Turner is in the running for POY. Expectations are a lot higher for Turner than Salmons.

my thing is how is it more unrealistic to think he will be like salmon( which is alot more likely) then for him to be like penny( which is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more unlikely)?..people with comparisions expect people to believe a player to be a super star over a good player even if history has shown us there are alot more good players then there are superstars. another thing is some players games are bmore suited for the nba then they are in college. look at psyco t. and i must have been wrong to think a player who is a good passer rebounder or shooter couldnt possibly not be as good doing that same stuff in the nba even though the level of comp is wayyyyyyyyy better. lets get a lil more real. yes he can run the point in college but how many teams are saying thats where hes gonna play full time in the nba?..i heard alot saying penny would and magic but most are saying he will be a combo guard which means play some spot time at the point but most time at the sg. i dont see whats so off by thinking he will put up numbers like salmons especially since salmons is putting up very very good numbers

    True enough, very true

Clearly he just wasn’t good enough, and they were right.

Very, very wrong, John Salmons has played the point various times in his career and the reason he was drafted that low is bcuz he had a subpar career compared to the guys he was drafted ahead of:

John Salmons is not as bad as people are saying. The biggest thing in the NBA is getting opportunity. He showed promise in Philly and put up nice number in Sac town. he even put up nice number in Chi town after the trade but the next year he was kind of bad until he went to the bench and he was alright. He is playing real well with the Bucks and have assisted in their winning. He may not be able to be a point but i am sure he takes pressure off of Jennings with what he can do. Numbers wise Evan could be like Salmons in his better years but i have watch Evan a few times and he does not remind me of Salmons are Penny Hardaway but i will say there were a few things i saw that he does this is similiar to both players. I have not seen Evan as much as i would like but I will make sure to watch a lot of game during March Madness and get my scout on. I will probably make declarations like i did last year and get clown for it only to be right yet no one that clown me about Curry is even giving my due

not sure about that, penny was a very good three point shooter. they are both tall and can dribble and pass. penny was also a very underrated dunker.

We are talking the early Orlando Penny here right? If we keep comparing him to Hill and Hardaway does that mean we think he will get injured a lot as well?
