ngnqqParticipantJose Calderon may not play again in Detroit’s final games of the season. Could the 31-year-old veteran point guard — an unrestricted free agent this summer — have already played his last game with the Pistons?
David Mayo of mlive.com wrote on Sunday that Calderon hasn’t been officially ruled out for the Pistons’ remaining games against Philadelphia and Brookly, but “was unable to practice again Sunday because of a strained right elbow tendon and the likelihood is that the free agent-to-be point guard has played his last game this season.”
Resigning Calderon would be one way for the Pistons to set up their roster for the years ahead, which would likely lead to Brandon Knight sliding to the 2 and drafting a top-rated small forward becoming the primary focus in June. But the chances are good that many teams will be interested for Calderon, who in many ways has been Steve Nash-lite over the course of his career as an efficient shooter and pass-first point guard.
The question is whether he will resign. So far, he has been noncommittal on the issue, and teams like Utah, Sacramento, Dallas and Milwaukee are expected to show interest> If that’s the case, Calderon’s days in Detroit could very well be over after this week.
