Great hs matchup on ESPN. Number 1 senior vs number 1 jr.
Here are my thoughts on both:

Holmgren: He absolutely dominated this game. Bates might be the best long-term prospect, but holmgren clearly showed who is the best player in high school basketball right now. Incredible height and wingspan, and unbelievable coordination and skill set for a player his size. Has an incredible feel for the game and plays at his own pace. One of the best passing bigs I’ve seen. I can’t really say I’ve seen an American prospect quite like him before. There are just so many things he can do on the floor. On the downside, you look at his body and just cringe. He’s going to have to seriously bulk up to survive at higher levels of basketball.
Bates: The one on one scoring ability is clearly evident. He just has such an advanced skill set when it comes to scoring the ball. Unlimited range. Advanced footwork in isolation situations. Great touch around the basket. While he’s thin as well, his body type is much less concerning than holmgren. The question going forward is how much he’ll develop his game beyond scoring. While holmgren dominated this game in all aspects, bates’ dominance was strictly limited to scoring. Took some really bad and forced shots and clearly seemed to be playing to the cameras at times. Defensive effort left a lot to be desired. Didn’t really seem to make his teammates better in this game the way holmgren did. But with all that being said, is still only 16 and had 36 points.
Definitely look forward to seeing a lot more of these 2 in the future.

Bates and Holmgren would probably go 1 and 2 in this year’s draft. Holmgren’s length seems to bother Bates.Holmgren seemed to be playing with a chip on his shoulder. And wanted to prove his haters wrong. No lack of confidence in dat kid. After the game he posted a scouting report of the strengths & weaknesses of himself and Bates. Then telling people to put some respect on his name. lol. In 1 of the later games Jalen Hardy lived up to the hype surrounding him.

Hogrem reminds me of Marcus Camby.
Bates reminds me of Kevin Durant.

Camby couldn’t shoot, handle the ball or pass the way holmgren can.

I was blown away by Holmgren. Man, he looks good. Thought he absolutely destroyed Bates who is supposed to be a generational talent. Holmgren is tall, long, has a motor, can handle the ball as a point center, pull up for three, and dunk on you. Not to mention he’s an elite shot blocker with the chip to want to make you eat leather. Is there another player at his size with these skills and potential? Better than AD at same age? I think so.

Chet Holmgren will be the NEXT Chet Holmgren! This dude is bad a$$! He could have the better career than Bates. He’s definitely the new prototypical point center of this era. He could change the game for sure.

The key difference to me is emoni bates plays tough but plays like ok I’m bigger then u get out my way. The chet holmgren plays like I’ve been literally broken throughout life and betrayed so when I see you it’s literally life or death wit you. So it’s a huge difference in mentality’s. If bates can develop that mentality he will be better if not Chet will continue to out play him. Rant done👍🏾.,,,

You’d have to be old to remember it, but he looks a bit like Arvydas Sabonis before the knee problems.
