drk3351ParticipantHey guys. I made a SL evaluation video analazing Mudiay’s game. Let me know what you think of his NBA future, and thanks for watching.

BleedGreen808ParticipantThanks for the breakdown. I didn’t get to see any of his games and highlights don’t paint a full picture of his play. He has the physical tools to be great on both ends of the court. It’s just a matter of putting in the work on his handle, shooting, and finishing ability. He’ll need to get a consistent jumper to keep defenses honest in the pick and roll.

Mr. HookShotParticipantAlthough people compared him to Westbrook and Rose in terms of his play, he plays a bit different. He looks like a pass-first guard, who has good vision of the entire floor, who is a solid defender as well. He mainly lacks two things: confidence in his outside shot (form looks good), and a good touch around the basket. I believe both will come with time, as he gets more comfortable doing both.

T RexNice report coach.
I still say he’s not a top 10 pick caliber prospect, and that he’ll be ranked late teens or second round in future re-drafts.
Somebody tell me what he does better than Tony Wroten, a comparison I was making before the draft.
He’s too slow laterally to defend starting point guards, and he doesn’t have the work ethic or mentality to even start to compensate for his lack of lateral quickness.
And he’s only going to get heavier, and slower laterally.
If he’s going to start in the NBA, he’ll be defending SGs, while perhaps somebody like Gary Harris defends the starting point guard. Either that or some other guard with a lot more lateral quickness and mental toughness than Mudiay.
The obvious defensive questions surrounding Mudiay and especially Russell were dismisssed by most people here, and probably most scouts as well.
Give me Terry Rozier over either of them. Not only does he play way, WAY better defense than either of them, but he actually has the elite NBA athleticism to get wherever he wants to go with the ball in his hands.
Russell and Mudiay have JAG written all over them, though Mudiay less so than Russell.
You can fiind mildly athletic combo guards like Mudiay on the free agency scrap heap every year, for minimum contracts or below 5 million per year.
Evan Turner last summer, for instance.

Magic JordanParticipantJust curious if you watched either Russell or Mudiay play in their summer league games? I am slighty biased as you are with Rozier because I would like to think that the Lakers made the correct pick. However I thought Russell’s on ball defense was really good. Waaay better than advertised, despite his physical limitations. Everybody was harping on him for being so unathletic, and nobody percieved him as an athlete prior to the draft, to me I didn’t see those type of limitations watching him play. He looks in control, which doesn’t mean he isn’t athletic. People said he was having trouble with the press… no he wasn’t, he was just taking his time advancing the ball, which is totally in his right. Only a few of his turnovers came from dribbling the basketball, the rest were from passes… more specifically his teammates not being ready for them. There are plenty of examples of players less athletic than Russell having success in the NBA… and plenty of examples of dynamic athletes not finding a spot in the NBA. I guess it’s what you prefer. You obviously place heavy emphasis on athleticism which is fine. I place higher emphasis on IQ and shooting, or in other terms… skills. I always prefer basketball players as opposed to athletes, but again… each person/team has their own preference and knowing what I know about you you love athleticism.. which is cool. But to act like a players lack of athleticism is an indictment on the rest of his career is a little ridiculous.
People were so quick to bash Russell because he is a Laker, yet he put up almost identical stats as Mudiay for the summer. And Mudiay gets praised by most. It’s all in the eye of the beholder. I saw a few things from Russell that worried me, but I didn’t see most of the things that the majority of his doubters are talking about. You see a lack of athleticism… I see someone who wasn’t trying to run their fastest or hardest, or cut the sharpest on every play… when he needed burst he had it.
Mudiay is an overrated athlete and I totally agree with you when you say he is going to get bigger which won’t help his speed or quickness… but can make him a handful when people start bouncing off of him on the way to the hoop.
Now Rozier… you may be able to make the argument of value in relation to their draft position. But comparing the 3 isn’t fair. Rozier is older, shorter and quite frankly just not as good… even though he may be the best athlete of the bunch, eventually they will have to play basketball. He projects as a bench player for the majority of his career. If you call that better "value" then okay. Nobody besides a celtic fan (arambone) would make the argument that he is a better prospect than either of those players, let alone even in the same ball park.

T RexCeltics fans know that elite perimeter defense. Lakers fans just know about Nick Young, old Kobe level defense from their guards.
Slow-mo can only work if you’re 6’9 or taller.
I’d take Bogdan Bogdanovic over Russell.

T RexYoung prospects can make mistakes and play poorly in summer league, but still have sky high potential.
But that’s assuming they have elite athleticism, or size, or a rare size-athleticism combination.
With Russell and to a lesser extent Mudiay, their potential future as stars is based on athleticism that they don’t have, but were inaccurately presumed to have.

herceg_bukuParticipantHis biggset weakness to me from what i saw in ur report is that he rushes too much and tries to break the double team the way westbrooke does. This is obviously his lack of experience which he will develop and make it his strength im sure of it.
His greatest strength aside from his obvious physical abilities and driving to the basket is his passing. I thought his passing was excpetional especially with recognizing double teams and who is playing off thier man, so he found them cross court passes.
His shot mechanics look FINE to me, he is not a good shoot which he can develop, but his shot mechanics are NOT bad like some people are suggesting. He hasnt had to rely on his shot so he isnt a good shooter yet.
He will be fine once he figures it all out, I am a strong believer in his abilities.

MopgrassParticipantIn Mudiay’s worst game, they finally adjusted to him, played off him, and let him shoot the ball. It was quite bad. He’s really going to bring his jumper around in a hurry to be effective. Maybe he can do that, but I’m guessing the year will be bumpy. I think rookie of the year will be between Mudiay, Okafor, Stanley, Russell, and Turner.
