princejamesParticipantI don’t want to rate him to high, because I think he has to improve his use of fundamentals, improve his feel for game, improve his defensive intensity and defensive aggressiveness, and improve his ability to be a needed playmaker who can also consistently create offense for others when the ball in his hands.
But it’s becoming hard to ignore the great talent that Dwayne Bacon possesses. He really has the chance to develop into an elite shooting guard at the NBA level. I’m starting to fall in love with his size, strength, body control, powerful first step quickness, slashing ability, great finishing ability, shot creating ability, shot making ability, ability to maneuver in traffic, ability to create offense for himself in traffic and against multiple defenders, great contact lay-up finishing ability around the rim, ability to play above the rim, hang in the air, and be a acrobatic shot maker around the rim, and ability to create offense for himself from anywhere on the basketball court. He also possesses great open court athleticism and great scoring instincts with-in fast break situations
I think he will possibly be drafted as a lottery pick, strictly because he possesses great potential.
It’s rare to see shooting guards who possess his combination of athleticism, strength, size, body control, scoring instincts and shot making ability. In the 80’s, 90s, and early 2000s, there were a lot of great shooting guards like that. Now you look in the league and see a lot of small shooting guards who are about 6’3” or 6’4’’. Dwayne Bacon is a legit 6’7’’ with exceptional physical tools and high quality skills.
Dwayne Bacon simply just possesses the talent and ability that will allow him to be as great as he wants to be. And the great thing is that he knows that hard work and needed skill development is the key to his success. Which is why he returned back to school, worked on becoming a better player, and has shown improvements in his shooting skills, defensive skills, and decision making.
It’s not guaranteed that he will become a star, but he has the potential to become a star, and a top 10 shooting guard at the NBA Level

Taylor Gang MikeParticipantThats my guy. Watch every game. He reminds me so much of MJ and hes in that Kobe and Derozan SG mold. He has improved his shooting and his defense is good. He should be top 5-10 in the draft. He would fit perfect with his friend Ben Simmons on the sixers as their wing scorer. So talented

jerb2011ParticipantI know he’s 6’7, but could he play SF, or is he only/best suited as a SG? He’s slotted to go to OKC who is SF-deprived

r377ParticipantI haven’t watched him this year, has he improved from last season ?
I was not impressed with him last season – he had that Jordan / kobe alpha dog mentality where he thinks he can take over the game and tries to do too much. Problem is he isn’t as good as those guys and struggled to finish around the rim

OhCanada-ParticipantHe’s defenitely improved yet he still has some of those negative tendancies previously mentioned although he is fighting them. He still has that alpha mentality but this year he is actually finishing. He just dropped 29 points on a night where Isaac and Mayes really couldn’t do a thing. Virginia’s defense is amongst the best in the country as well and hhe really picked them apart.
Something he has started to do is read the defense. Against Wake Forest he was attacking the rim aggressively and utilizing a pull up jumper to get his points. Against Virginia he scored 26 in the second half including the game winning three. He hit 6 threes against a team that does not allow easy layups and clogs up everything inside the 3- point line.
My problem with Bacon is not his scoring its the rest of his game. He has terrible fundimentals defensively. He doesn’t fight through screens and usually goes under which in college you may get away with but in the NBA you’ll get lit up. He stands straight up and does not have active hands. He is non exist on the glass and has bad court awareness. I don’t think I saw him get a single assist in either game and in the Virginia game he didn’t get a single rebound. At 6’7 225 you gotta get some rebounds and when you touch the ball as much as he does you should be able to drive to the time and get at least a bail out assist setting up some of those deadly shooters the Seminoles have. Although today I will say its not his fault he didn’t get any assists as most of his scoring came from the perimeter and Virginia’s defense would not collapse at all.
He will probally leave after this year and could go late lotto and develop in the NBA but for him to be an effiecient role player he has to work on defensive effort and rebounding at the very least. The playnaking would just bring everything full circle but without it he can still carve out a niche.

IlladelphParticipantLast year I came out critical of Dwayne Bacon. Essentially I said that he was a lot older than the competition (currently 21 year old soph), and so his performance was not as impressive than it would have been had he been a true 18 year-old freshman.
I have seen a couple of FSU games and I really don’t see a whole lot more than I saw last year. Bacon’s stats looked good going in to conference play, but about halfway through the conference play you could see Bacon’s weaknesses. The shooting percentage, PER, ws, spg, tov, and shooting stats all came down. I think he has improved since last year and we are just getting into conference play so we will see what we will see. I suspect that his stats will revert toward his numbers that he posted last year once conference play started. BUT, if he is able to maintain his game, his efficiency, and his overall play throughout conference play then Bacon could be first round material. But I think once he has to face the ACC grind, he will not be able to sustain his higher level of play. If I am wrong, I will be back on this site to sing his praises. He has NBA size, and average NBA athleticism, so he defintiely has NBA potential. But I just don’t think he has the understanding to play at a high level against stiff competition. We will see. Again, I will come back and sing his praises if he proves me wrong, but at this point I am thinking mid to late second round material. I certainly wouldn’t use a lottery pick on him.

r377ParticipantJust watched my first FSU game of the season. Nothing has seemed to change with Dwayne Bacon.
Low IQ, forces up bad shots and will struggle to finish at the rim in the pros.
Currently ranked 19th overall, I just cannot see it with Bacon. I wouldn’t waste a first round pick on him. I just can’t see him being an NBA player. I think D League or Europe for Bacon….

r377ParticipantDwayne Bacon comparison is Harold Miner.
Good college player, great body, athletic and good dunker who struggled to make it in the pro’s. That’s what I think will happen to Bacon….

theballerwayParticipantThis guy. I think he is a better all around player than Minor was yet not nearly as athletic
He reminds me of Stephen Jackson (late Indiana, GSW version). hes got got all the tools aside from a little more creative iso ball handling maybe. And he can play on both sides of the ball.
