I’ve seen quite a few topics on here and a bit of hype about Dwayne Bacon, so I decided to check out a Florida State game to see what he was like…

I was not impressed. Very selfish. Cherry picker, always the first to run down the court in offense. Can score in transition and thats about it. He thinks he is the next Kobe/Jordan and tries to do too much. He doesn’t look for teammates and is always looking to take it to the rim, where he struggles.

310 shots and just 33 assists on the season (almost 10:1). He has no outside shot. I think he will struggle as a pro. Overrated…

What’s worse is that he is so selfish, Beasley (who I also wanted to see) barely got to touch the ball with Bacon.

I think we all see his selfishness and cockiness, but I ignore it all because that can easily be fixed with maturity and the right mentoring. His talent is undeniable, the guy can score. Crafty around the basket and his ability to read defenses will only improve. Physically he has it all and has no real weakness in his game so I think it’s easy for an NBA team to ignore his selfishness and lack of effort at times on the court.

If you look at Bacon’s stats in 11 ACC games, it ain’t pretty.  39% shooting, 18% from 3, and a horrible assist to turnover ratio.  His PER has fallen to a below average 14.2, and he has the 3rd highest usage rate in the entire conference.  

The ACC is a lot tougher than FSU’s cupccake preseason schedule, and you see a massive dropoff in Bacon’s efficiency, in spite of a crazy usage rate.  The guy needs to show that he has an NBA level skill.  It is not shooting that is for sure.  It is not playmaking, that is even more obvious.  Defense? No.  So what does the guy do at an NBA level?  

Guy needs to develop for another year or two, but he’ll turn 21 this summer so that is probably a concern.  I think the guy should stay and improve his game though.  I used to think he would be a late 1st rounder, but now I think he is definitely 2nd round at best.  Better for him long-term to stay in college, get better and learn the game, and mb even get his degree.  I wish him the best because he seems like a great kid.

There you go again throwing out a bunch of numbers without even watching him play. Also you don’t wish him the best, stop lying, you really want him to struggle his whole career so you can say i told you so.

Look man, since my original post on Dwayne Bacon I have seen 4 out of the last 6 FSU games.  My opinion on him has developed since ACC conference play has started.  FSU has a strong SOS, and so I expected Bacon to get tested.  I thought that maybe I was too harsh on the guy in my early season assessment.

But, he has underperformed, and the numbers don’t lie.  I’ve seen him play and I am not impressed with his game.  You seem to think that he is an NBA caliber player, but I haven’t heard any specifics from you.  What does he do well at the college level?  He’s not a shooter, he’s not a playmaker, and his defense is below average for a supposedly elite player.   Tell me what he does at an NBA level?  If he can’t even dominate in the ACC, especially with his ridiculous usage rate, then how is he going to contribute to an NBA team?  

I really do hope the guy makes the right decision and stays at FSU, and hopefully graduates.  At his current rate of development, and his performance thus far, I do not see him having an NBA career if he comes out this year.  If I am wrong, great.  Good for him.  But I think that he would be better off as a 4 year guy, learning the game, and getting his degree.  

If you are going to disagree with me, then at least make an argument for the guy instead of simply attacking me, and ignoring his "bunch of numbers", and accusing me of not having seen him play.  I want to hear a real argument for him.  What’s he shown so far that an NBA team would spend a first round pick on him for?

It’s not all about the numbers like you think it is. Take Paul George for example. Did he dominate at Fresno? No. He was a developing player and some of his numbers/percentages actually went down from Freshmen to Sophomore years while playing against weaker competition then Bacon is playing right now. You make it seem like just because he isn’t putting up big numbers in college he is not going to be good later on.

He has elite NBA athleticism, solid shooting mechanics, good defensive potential, can dive the lane in transition and half court and is crafty around the rim, prototypical NBA size for an SG. He is a developing player just like PG was and his shot should start to drop with time.

I can’t believe how people can just ignore negative intangibles since historically they are tied to how likely a player is to coming close to or reaching his potential.

I’m not completely down on him as a prospect, but I never was particularly high on him either.  I saw some of the earlier posts on this kid, proclaiming he’s the best SG prospect in this draft and just laughed.  He started the year as a borderline 1st rounder in my eyes and he hasn’t shown me anything to think otherwise.  The NBA isn’t exactly chomping at the bit for low IQ, ball-dominant wings, who don’t shoot it well or play with consistent energy.

 As expected Dwayne Bacon struggled this year as a rookie shooting just 37 and 25%.  He did get some good minutes as Charlotte had injuries so no excuses for him…
