The Rockets have decided to not sign the offer sheet for Chandler Parsons, making the 2nd round pick Houston developed a Dallas Maverick…

Why would the Rockets waste Parsons as an asset? They claim Parsons as their third best player would not make for a championship team, but do they not realize they could have signed Parsons and used him in a package to obtain Kevin Love or another ‘championship’ piece?

Tsk Tsk Daryl Morey, Tsk Tsk.

Gota agree with you on that one. They seemed so unwilling to move Parsons in any deal involving Love or Rondo but now they’re just letting him walk for nothing? He’s also three years younger than Ariza.

    he was perfect for them.

He could play next to Ariza going up at PF to stretch next to Howard and allowed Harden to play off the ball.

I understand y the rockets made this decision, but they declined his what 900k contract to have him sign with another team all the while just to create salary cap for players who never decided to join their team. Good for parsons to get paid, but another miss for the rockets and aria isn’t bad replacement.

I don’t understand the Rockets offseason. They trade Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin away for nothing, which could have been a good move IF they were going to sign a big free agent. Then they sign Trevor Ariza and let Chandler Parsons walk. There is no way the Rockets improved this offseason. And if they were trying to find a way to trade for Kevin Love, letting your assets walk away is not a way to do it.

On the flip side, I love what the Mavs did. They knew Melo was out of their league, so they targeted a key player in free agency. Mavs traded for Chandler, re-signed Dirk, signed Parsons, next move is to figure out the point guard situation. Not sold on the Lance Stephenson, and I am not sure they have the money now, but there are quality free agents around. Also, the Celtics have 4 starting-caliber guards in Rondo, Smart, Thorton, and Bradley. I imagine that they plan on building around Smart and Bradley (just signed a 4yr/32million contract). Rondo could cost a lot, but the Mavs could be an intriguing destination.

I hope it backfires and hurts the Rockets. Cheap Bastards

This should p!ss off Harden and D12. They didn’t get better. They wanted to not have to pay the extra money to Lin and Asik. It’s no way they made the team worse.

Morey did get two years off Lin and Asik for only 20 million total. The Rockets only actually paid 5 million per season and those 8.4 hit hits actually saved them another 6.8 million per year (so 13.6 in total) because that space was technically filled up but the team didn’t have to actually give that money to the players. But they got to say hey were at he cap. The NBAPA should look into that as a way a team could have technically circumvinted the salary floor, if Houston was in that situation. The rule is changed now anyway but still.

Morey has been re-elevated to genius status because he saves owners so much money. Not only did he save them 13.6 in the difference between their cap figure and the amount they actually payed out, he got rid of them at a time they would have cost an extra 13.2 million this year.

If Morey is dumb, he is dumb like a money hungry shark who gave the illusion he was spending while raking in his bosses millions.

Asik and Lin were two grossly overpayed backups.  Because of the deals Morey dealt to get them – he spent as much time trying to figure out how to get rid of them.  I think not matching Parsons is his own reaction to his previous blunders – now afraid to pull the trigger again on over-paying – except this time the player is a legit starter

bad move by a guy that usually makes smart moves….They could’ve had Parsons for next season at only a million dollars..Now they dont get any compension for him and they didnt get a major free agent….

parsons is having a great week..2morrow he’s expected to be added to team usa…..

So the rockets have lost Asik, Lin, and now Parsons and only have adding Ariza to show for it? Rough offseason so far

It has to be they think they’ll be able to pair Harden/Howard with a thrid super-star, perhaps even next year.  I think when they learned they weren’t getting Bosh they knew they wouldn’t match Parsons who’s way overpaid by Dallas.  Next years FA class is pretty nice so perhaps that’s what they’re aiming for – a third FA allstar…  I like Parsons but he’s mad overpaid – 15mil per year for 3 years is crazy.  McHale knows what he’s doing.  If Dallas can figure out a way to add Lance Stephenson, it’s a real coup for them this summer if they can add both Lance and Parsons.  Their cap shows 35 mil b/4 parsons which takes it up to 50, so you have good room to overpay Lance say at 11/12 mil per

I don’t like the move either, but for 16 mil a yr a an opt out  after 2 and how the contract was set up i understand why they decided not to match. Since they cleared max money for Bosh and only signed Ariza to an 8 mil deal Houston should have around 12 mil in cap space to play with. So i believe Morey still may have something up his sleeve. Make a play for Bledsoe or Monroe maybe a sign and trade with Phoenix or Detriot. Rondo might be available soon. Also they are working on a sign and trade with Parson and the Mavs that could give them a huge trade exception. I haven’t liked how this offseason played out so far for Houston but the moves they have made are still allowing for flexibility for this year and next offseason. But when you gamble big alot like Morey do you win some you lose some.

the rockets still have cap space to make a run at a player like eric bledsoe or greg monroe.. either would be good options that might not have an offer matched.

Just curious, but why does everyone think the whole thing with Parsons was so easy? From my standpoint you had two options. Use the team option and pay him less than a million for another year, then he is a free agent or let him be restricted this year and take your chances on matching. If you exercise the team option then you willingly underpay him. It happens, but you probably increased the chances of him not resigning. Guys want long term security at the first chance they get. Some of you also have no clue how much power some of these agents and agencies have. For the most part there are a handful of agents for the majority of these players. Even if you keep him at 900k it is near impossible to get equal value for him in a trade. He makes so little that you have to find a larger contract to attach to him and I’m not sure they have any of those left outside of Harden and Howard. They decided to sign Ariza. Probably the next best option left for them and at a contract that declines so I assume they still have some money to fill out the rest of the roster.

when dallas signed the offer sheet it messed hou up.

then when they moved lin to the lakers for nothing instead of waiting to trade with the sixers after bosh signed with them they lost lin and a first round pick.

hou played their self it was a risky move but they should have just kept parsons on the 1 millon deal and add parts if they messed out of melo.

but I see them going after bledsole or Monroe

its a reason those two haven’t signed back yet I think they are exploring whats out their maybe bledsole wants to be featured on a star power team in hou not a mix&match phx suns team.
remember the suns wanted eric Gordon for 16 million but im not sure since signing and drafting 2 pgs they are sold on Bledsoe staying so …..

Parsons is no longer an asset at 3 years 45 million.

I personally would have picked up the option because he is still tradable even if only for OJ Mayo and Illysova. Now he represents nothing. I think a line up with him and Ariza as the 3 and 4 could have put up a lot of points at times. Parsons played better as a stretch 4 in spurts last year than as a 3.

Morey is usually a very bright and intuitive GM. But this was an incredibly dumb move. They gambled and lost BIG. This definitely sets the Rockets back. Not sure how much, but it does without a doubt

Declining his team option was a mistake in the first place. Trading Jeremy Lin because Bosh “verbally committed” to them was another mistake. An offseason to forget in Houston. Ariza could end up being a terrible signing based in his overall career outlook. He had a nice contract season, let’s see how he responds on the court now that he has a long term deal.

The Mavericks did to the Rockets what the Rockets did to the Bulls and Knicks (Asik and Lin).

The Rockets could still work this into a big trade exception though, so that could be useful.  But for winning now, Houston have lost more recently than they have gained.

If they do sign-and-trade Parsons to get the trade exception, maybe the Rockets could figure out a way to get Rondo, by taking back Gerald Wallace too.  But Houston is running out of assets to trade.

i think for a sign and trade to be done, there should have been an agreement before parsons signed the offer sheet. once he did that, the only other options was that dallas would get him or the rockets would match and get him back. the former happened and no more shot of a S&T happening.

i wonder if anyone else remembered the boozer scenario like this. cavs opts him out of his rookie deal to make him a restricted free agent a year early to sign to a longer deal. his agent able to get a max or near max deal from the jazz whose out of clevelands price range, and doesnt match.

Saying in hindsight that declining the team option on Parsons is fairly easy; if I remember correctly during an earlier discussion on this site, almost everybody stated this was actually a very smart move by Morey and the Rockets, praising the possibility created to haul in another max player.

Apart from that, for the people stating the Rockets could go after Bledsoe; I expect the Suns to match every offer for him, so that is out of the question. Monroe would not be a good pick-up, considering the mismatch between him and Howard (who is going to defend quicker PFs; bit similar to Asik-Howard but worse on defense actually). They should use their cap space on smart, veteran players that fulfill a need. Marion would be a good option as good defending stretch 4, a back-up pg (Sessions? Nelson? Hinrich? M. Williams?) and perhaps some shooters like Allan Anderson or Fredette.

it was a smart move and still is the presumption was he would match any offer.

now that he failed to acquire a top talent and lost lin for nothing ….he thinks ariza is an upgrade over parsons defense wise….and he may go out and sign a restricted free agent.

to be honest lance came into the league as a pg/sg bird wanted him to be a point and he averaged more assits last year then George hill.

Why not go after lance or Bledsoe ? if you cant beat them join them he lost on parsons now he cant take a player from another team like the mavs did his team.

I thought he would match but I think he doesn’t envison ariza sf and parson full time pf.
I would have still tried to sign a palyer tehn matched parsons. I feel like he didn’t want to make decision based soley on time restraints and desperation.

theres other player on the market still and he still has time. parsons is good but will he put up better numbers in another system? I doubt it.

I’m a huge Rockets fan, I don’t think they dropped the ball at all. Things didn’t work out the way they planned, but they definitely tried. Got rid of Asik (who had been a problem and wanted to be out anyways) to create space for a star. Pitched to Melo, missed him. Pitched to Bosh 4 years 88million. Bosh said he wanted to stay in Miami TO PLAY WITH LEBRON. They had already committed to trading Lin in the case Bosh comes. Morey and his staff thought it was a foregone conclusion and had been talking non stop with Bosh. Everything is going as planned….. Meanwhile Parsons signs a ridiculous offer sheet for 16mil. The Rockets never had intent to sign that. I wouldn’t think twice about it, the same way they didn’t. Parsons is a very good player, but he’s not worth 16mil, especially when you already have two max contract players on your roster. I didn’t want to let him go, but I rather have an Ariza who just had a career year and is a better shooter and defender for 8mil than to pay Parsons 16mil.

Back to Bosh… He was close to signing with the Rockets. They give up Lin and a first rounder to create the space for Bosh. At the last minute, Miami throws the bank at him. 5 years 118mil…. Done deal.

I think most of us would’ve done the same thing… Everything looked fine, but money talks. Miami pulled him back at the last minute. It didn’t work out for Houston, but they still have  a good team with cap room to sign a few more good players.

Oh yea, the only thing I didn’t agree with was not exercising the team option for Parsons in the 1st place. He would’ve counted against the cap for less than 1mil. It’s to my understanding that they didn’t exercise it because they needed him to have a bigger salary in case they had to use him in a trade for a Superstar like Melo or Love.

I’m a huge Rockets fan, I don’t think they dropped the ball at all. Things didn’t work out the way they planned, but they definitely tried. Got rid of Asik (who had been a problem and wanted to be out anyways) to create space for a star. Pitched to Melo, missed him. Pitched to Bosh 4 years 88million. they wanted to offer as much as possible to reel a player in.

in hind sight they should have kept parsons on that one mill one year deal.

but morey said it best: you want to be the one that finds the parsons , not the one that gives them the max contract.

they risked everything and it blew up in their face but they would have had to pay him next year and a team would have offered him close to that after the Hayward offer that set the market for parsons.

so the only thing they got was a head start to the inevitable.

if they signed bosh I think they would have kept parsons but they didn’t so.
