Would like a few of the resident draftniks and evaluators to give me some of their thoughts and insight on Alex Poythress’ potential/ceiling, flaws, etc. Really liked him coming out of HS. Thanks.

I’ll say Poythress’ potential is greater than Terrance Jones as a fellow Kentucky prospect and has top 10 potential. He can dunk standing, runs the floor well, and is extremely strong for his size. He was lost last year on the court as he didn’t fit the dribble drive well nor could he hit 3’s consistently. He’s sort of a combo forward as he likely will at the 4 pro level with the ability to defend the 3 and 4. He’s a tad undersized at 6’8 but can add to his frame. He’s not very fluid off of the dribble, but he’s a strong rebounder. He’ll have to limit his fouls next year as that was a consistent problem his freshman year. He’s still young and many people expect 18 year olds to either play lights out or they are busts from what I’ve seen. I think he just needs to develop his game and when all is said and done I think he’ll be a solid pro.

Seemed more like a PF than a SF to me. He hadn’t really developed any offensive game, but relied on athleticism and energy to generate points. He’s still raw at either spot, but he isn’t laterally quick enough to guard an NBA SF in my opinion.

He reminds of a mix between Jeff Green and Brandon Bass

He’s a great athlete with a great strong and mature body, who has solid combo forward skills

I think he can easily develop into a starting power forward or starting small forward in the NBA if he works on improving his motor and if he works on enhancing his basketball I.Q ( he needs to work on consistently making the simple play which will help him become a more efficient basketball player )

A suprisingly very good shooter who has the athleticism and an underrated skill set that will allow him to potentially develop into a player who can score in a variety ways

I love his physical tools and potential to develop into a good, skilled, physically tough, and rug-ged basketball player

If he develops properly, I think he will end up being a solid pro for many years to come in the NBA

I actually think he went to the wrong college. Because he probably needs to spend 3 to 4 years in college to develop properly and prepare himself to be successful in the NBA, but the mindset of being a leave college early player might hurt his development if he decides to leave early

He will greatly benefit from playing with a great point guard who can help create easier offensive opportunities for him and who will do a better job of using his dynamic physical tools and athletic finishing ability

When I look at his frame and then watch him play basketball, it occurs to me that Poythress should Google Antonio Gates.

Reminds me of Earl Clark in the sense that he’s a tweener with a lot of raw talent. It took Clark a few years to find some time on the floor in the league and I could see the same happening to Poythress.

He’s alot like Jeff Green. He actually is a pretty good stand still shooter but no real skill stands out (Aaron Gordon is a lot like this except a better motor and more athletic). From what I have read from some of the players Alex and Julius Randle have been going at it hard which is great news since Alex was know last year as having a low motor

Poythress is very strong, very athletic, and very talented. His body type to me looks similar to Lebron’s. The problem with Poythress is that he has absolutely no handles at all and shows no intensity on the court at all. Calipari was begging him to scream like most players do after hed make monster dunks last year. He kinda looked in over his head at UK last year. As was mentioned earlier i think going against Randle every day at practice will get him more energized to utilize his potential. I think his lack of handles will force him to the 4, as well as the rumors that he has grown 2 inches since getting to Lexington last year. Id look for him to have a much more consistent year this year and be taken somewhere in the mid to late first in this very deep draft. His size, strength, and serviceable shooting make him a very interesting prospect.

I love the kids physical tools, however so far in his college career his mental aspects have not developed. He has a low motor and there is times were his agression can seriously be questioned. I do not see Poythress as a top 10 talent simply because there is not one area of the game he dominates. As far as those Earl Clark and Jeff Green comparisons, I think at this stage Poythress jump shot is not nearly as developed as Clark and Green. Due to his athletic ability and his reputation coming out of high school he will probably be a first round draft pick come 2014.

He had gotten taller measuring 6’9 in shoes at lebron camp and his wingspan is longer so he may need to just focus on being a PF since his height and length fits the bill. With a better handle he can be a solid face up power forward. He has all the tools you look for. Now it is time for his skill to catch up to his body.
