Lotto StudParticipantYear after year there is always at least 1 Lotto prospect to turn down a team to draft him. This year it has been said to be Jimmer Fredette to turn Milwaukee down. Which other Lotto prospects do you see turning a team down, because they cannot see themselves playing with a certain team ala Rubio turning down Memphis?

Awesome-O-420ParticipantMost of the time I would say it is the agent who is the one prohibiting the player from working out with certain teams. I think most draft prospects are just happy and greatful to get an oppurtunity and are willing to workout – but agents get in their heads not to work with certain teams, convincing them they either don’t have to, or shouldn’t because they think that team is a bad fit.

Da1potParticipantRealistically, you cannot turn a team down if they want to draft you. It would be incredibly foolish- especially if you are a lottery pick(and not an international one) with the guaranteed rookie scale contract and because the team that drafted you holds your rights, you are contractually forbidden to sign with any other NBA team or return to college. Rubio had more leverage with actually being able to "turn down" a team due to him being an international player who already had signed a contract with a foreign team- so he could pick and choose what team he wanted to play for by threatening to not come over.
On a different note, I’m glad the NBA has the first round rookie scale instead of drafted players being able to negotiate their own rookie contracts like in the MLB and NFL. In the MLB especially, players decide to not sign with a team and end up either going back to college or playing in some other baseball league until they are simply drafted again next year in virtually the same spot- only by a different team who offers them more money or who is thin at the position the drafted player plays. The NBA would be complete chaos if that was the case……..

Lotto StudParticipantTo be technical there has been rookies force their ways out of situations they did not want to be in……..Eli Manning forced the trade for New York to pick him. Word was out in 09 Rubio was refusing to be taken by Memphis.

Ahkasi ClayParticipantDanny Ferry did not want to be a clipper and went overseas a year
Stevie Fransis, forced his way out of Vancouver.
Fran Vázquez, said screw the whole thing (but he might even be coming over this year)
but saying you don’t want to play for a team, and actually getting your way after being drafted are 2 different things
