Here are some observations after watching last night’s draft.

1. Words most used: athletic, long wingspan
– There sure were a lot of players mentioned with these characteristics. I certainly hope that teams
didn’t draft players on this alone. Being a great athlete doesn’t mean you can play basketball. If this
were the case, Gerald Green would be an all-star.

2. Lack of shooters
– Here is a list of players taken in the first round considered to be good shooters: Wesley Johnson,
Xavier Henry, Paul George, and Luke Babbit. 4 out of 30 in the first round. This is probably why Andy
Rautins went so high. With Rautins you have 5 out of 60 in the entire draft. Yikes.

3. Lack of good point guards. John Wall. That’s it. I guess things even out with all the good point guards last year.

4. Note to players: Don’t rely on mock drafts. Hassan Whiteside is a perfect example. Daniel Orton was almost in the 2nd round.

5. The 2010 draft was the greatest day in Kentucky history. This is what Calipari said. Really? 5 players in the first round was more important than all the titles they’ve won. Yeah, I’m sure their fans are more excited about this draft than they are winning titles. Wow, I wonder why Calipari’s never won a championship.

im sure calipari liked the draft becasue it was good for recruting. But even though im not from kentucky and i cant speak for their fans, im gonna go out on a limb and guess winning a championship is a little more important then seeing a bunch of one and doners get drafted.

You didn’t include Gordon Hayward in your list of good shooters?

I suppose you could make a case for Hayword. I didn’t include him because he only shot 29% from 3. He did shoot very from there as a freshman. It’s difficult to evaluate him based on this.

I think Hayward’s shooting performances during his freshman season and during the FIBA U19 World Championships convinced scouts enough that he’s a good shooter. He also shot very well during workouts. I think it’s safe to put him on the list.

He definitely belongs on the list. Last year when he had a big role in the offense, he didn’t shoot great from beyond the arc, but he shot 60% from inside the arc. He has a very good mid range game, and in the NBA, he will shoot mush higher than 29% from beyond the arc. He is a better shooter than most NBA players were when they were rookies.

Also, you forgot James Anderson, possibly the best shooter in the draft.

The players the Blazers got in the draft were all left handed. That also includes Ryan Gomes.

After watching the draft and seeing 5 Kentucky players get guaranteed deals, it really makes me wonder about Cals coaching ability. It’s bad enough that you have 2 of the 3 best players in college basketball last year (Wall and Cousins). Patterson and Bledsoe were also two of the better players in the country. I would probably say Patterson was in the top 10 or 15. He would have had a monster year, but played within the system and managed to help be a part of a really successful year. I’ll even give him a pass on Orton and say that Orton got picked mostly on potential…The thing is how do you have that much talent and not win the championship? You end up having the deepest, biggest, and most athletic team in the country yet in your final game you’re getting carved up by a backup point guard and allowing non-ballhandlers to bring up the ball with no pressure when he is out of the game..
