Rip256Tony Parker is so far up his azz with all those rings that he wouldnt know what hustle meant anymore.
Marcus Smart couldnt get a hand on Patty Mills, who is basically a medium man’s Steph Curry with his lights out shooting.

PulseGlazerParticipantSmart is quite good, however, if not quite DPOY for obvious reasons.

T Rexwhat obvious reasons? He was second in the league in offensive fouls drawn as a ROOKIE.
the only reason he’s not a DPOY candidate right now is because nobody watched the Celtics last year.
How many point guards get assigned to lock down Kawhi Leonard for the fourth quarter?
How many players can lock down 3 positions?

NBAjunkie81ParticipantLuved his toughness, his size, his defense… But w/ guys like Noel, Gobert, DeAndre Jordan & Kawhi Leanord, Ibaka… I just can’t put Smart in that company for DPOY… Gobert is my choice for front runner this year – he is amazing…

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantSmart definitely has the tools and the toughness to be all-nba level defense for years to come. I don’t see him winning dpoy this year for several reasons but he could win it in the future. I think a lot of times guards don’t get enough consideration for dpoy. The pg position is probably the toughest to guard from an individual standpoint right now in the league.

NBAjunkie81Participantbut a guy like a 7 footer who blocks shots allows a team to have So many options at Both ends of the court,,, With a great Rim protector you can allow your guards to press more from end to end b/c they have the Shot blocker guarding the Rim… In the half court, you can have your guards & forwards get in his man’s shirt for the same reason, if the beat your man off the dribble, the shot blocker is there – waiting at the rim… Just his presence makes players change their shotm pressm think too much… It lowers the opponents FG% b/c you can push your defense out further & extend your defensive presence…
At the other end, you can put a guy on the court who is a great shooter or a great scorer that might be weak on Defense b/c the Rim protector cleans up any mistakes at the other end when his man beats him one on one… So I agree that a guard’s defense is important & difficult but a guy like Jordan, or Noel or Gobert & soon Willie Cauley Stein is so valuable – they are So rare… & guys like Noel & WCS are So freakishly quick at 7 foot we’re starting to see them defend the pick & roll which completely disrupts a teams entire offensive flow….

T RexThat works both ways. Great defensive guards means you can play Olynyk types at center, since truly great rim protectors are not only rare but usually one dimensional and major offensive liabilities.
Not to mention some of these rim protectors weigh 230-240 and get pushed around like rag dolls.
Nothing wrong with playing offensive oriented centers and defensive oriented guards, and the fact is a truly great defensive guard like Smart has many many more opportunities to impact the game, since guards have the ball most of the time.
Truly dominant defensive guards are just about as rare as dominant big men, they just don’t get the respect they deserve.
Porzingis though? That’s another story. He held Aldridge to ZERO field goals when he was guarding him last night, in addition to his amazing team defense and ability to even guard point guards.
