Now that NCAA season has been underway for a couple weeks, I would like to hear your views on the Parker/Melo comparisons.

I believe if you compare both at the same stage, Jabari has Melo by a long shot. The way Jabari is performing at a high level I say he is easily worthy of #1 overall talks. I also can admit prior to the collegiate season, I thought Jabari was overrated and not worthy of the Melo comparison, which a lot of it had to do with me only seeing the out of shape Jabari earlier this year. I’m so sold on the way he has excellent footwork for a kid that didn’t showcase it in HS and the way he attacks the rim.

Now with majority of the observations on the forum I seen before most compared him to the NBA Melo. I just would like to know does the comparison still stick?

I’m not comparing future accolades. I’m talking about performance.

But, really, do you remember how good Melo was as a Freshman? Stud. I still like the Paul Pierce comparison better, IMHO.

Did I say accolades? I’m talking performance, before people realized the lack of defense etc

Do we forget melo avg 22/10 in the big east as a freshman let alone lead cuse to the chip. Skill set wise and height they are similar. Melo didn’t have to attitude/selfish issues we see now in the nba at cuse he was elite of elite. .I am taking melo as a fresh over Parker. .

Jabari is blowing Carmelo away so far in the important stats. He is simply doing more across the board and doing it more effeciently. He is scary good through 7 games.

    TS%

    Melo: .537

    Parker: .688

    PER

    Melo: 27.2

    Parker: 36.1

whoa, we’re just 7 games into the season. It’s probable that Parker will have a few rough games shooting the ball (everybody does) and those averages will inevitably drop as the year goes on. If he actually finishes the year with those kind of numbers then we’ll talk.

For the OP I think the Carmelo comparison still works but to be honest he reminds me a lot of the scorers (Wilkins, King, Aguirre) I grew up watching in the late 80s, early 90s. A wide variety of moves, a silky smoothness to his game, and a certain craftiness that you can’t really teach.

I do think it’s kind of funny that you went from thinking he was being overrated in the Melo comparisons and now after a month think he’s being underrated in that comparison. Bit of a mood swing…

Don’t forget Melo had the better team as well. Skills I think Parker is better at this stage and has longer arms, but isn’t strong or quick as Melo.

Huuuh???  I’m a Cuse fan and I can tell you that’s BS saying that Melo had the better team.  For one we weren’t ranked in top 25 until after the 11th game when we got ranked #25.  We had some of the worst big men we’ve ever had that year.  This Duke team is a lot better.

It’s obvious a lot of people forgot how special Melo was at Cuse.  Yall must of forgot about the 15 straight points he dropped on Memphis in the 1st half of his college debut.  Go YouTube his performance against Texas in the Final Four.  I’d really like to revisit this thread after Parker plays 10 years in league.

Give me a freshman Melo. You can’t forget this guy had the moves, footwork, IQ, and no selfishness. At the time Melo was lookied upon as a guy who could eventually be a 25,8,6 guy in the league. While he doesn’t show it, he had some terrific passing ability and simply looked like he could become a truely great.

To steal a line from Bill Simmons…

Parker is basically Carmelo, if Carmelo was fun to play with.

I’m not going to get into all the "this point of their career" things, because I doubt any of us remember perfectly Melo’s first 7 collegiate games.

What I do know is, the sky is the limit with Parker, and we have basically seen Melo’s limit. A once in a lifetime scorer, and really nothing else. I think Parker will be more balanced but could be as good as Melo overall.
