Does anybody ever wonder how some players ever played in the NBA? A few that come to mind when I think about it is players such as:

Luke Walton,  Scalabrine, Mark Madsen, DJ Mbenga, Michael Ruffin, Patrick O’bryant

    Any thoughts?

Most of those guys are big men and as they say you can’t teach size.

Luke Walton isnt a bad player. He knows the triangle very well and has a very high basketball IQ. He has a bad back. It also doesnt hurt if your father played in the NBA….

Some players stick around because of size, and positive team support. Some remain on teams because gms want to be cheap and make bad decisions on roster moves.

Some of those players like Tyrober said have high basketball I.Q.’s. They won’t get to play much but can definitely be like another coach on the bench to teach the young prospects what to do in certain situations. Madsen and Scalabrine are two that come to mind.

Luke Walton is horrible… all people say is he knows this, he knows that, high IQ… excuses for a player that can’t play… if he has all these thing why does he play like 5 minutes a game? well i guess the best he will ever be is a back up and for a backup he isn’t half bad

Luke Walton when Healthy can ball but he has yet to be healthy for some time.  I think people forget stuff when a player is injured and are not good enough to produce anywhere near where they were when they were healthy.

Walton was quite good at offense when healthy because of the passing and general solid skills (could shoot a bit, dribble a bit). Mark Madsen is a complete mystery though. I remember arguing with someone when he came out if he would be good. I was like, the guy is neither tall or athletic and he also doesn’t have ANY basketball skills (i.e., he couldn’t shoot, dribble or pass). Really, how does that guy get drafted?

Scalabrine can at least shoot a bit and he has stayed in the league because he is a good citizen and he can stretch the defense with 3 point shooting.

Also, don’t underestimate the value of big men for practice. Young assistant coaches can fill in and run through drills as "guards". You can’t easily find a 6′ 9" guy for your starting center to practice against.

I wonder it all the time, yeah they have size…but none of them are really all that big, except DJ & POBry, but they’re probably the least skilled on that list in terms of basketball..plus theres been bigger guys that havent been able to stick..

Luke is a solid bench player, i’ll give him the exception on this one
