I believe this general concept has been posted on a forum before but I thought I’d put my spin on it.

Anthony Davis is the consensus number 1 pick, no questioning or denying that. I’m also not denying he will go number 1 in this years draft. What I’m wondering is whether , as a result of the acceptance of his No.1 status , we will learn anything further about him. I realize number 1 picks aren’t those to be taken lightly, but I feel as if the analysis of Davis has lost its depth of late. Seeing as how he got so much exposure through the NCAA tournament , coming through with a victory , I can understand why it may just be assumed that we have seen it all, but I think there is a lot left to see.

My first query is Davis’ size. He’s listed at 6’10 and 220. I don’t query his weight, but I believe he is at least 6’11 or 7 foot now. While that can only assumed to help, its his proportioned weight that worries me. It goes without saying he will put on weight, how much is the question. A lot of people are comparing his build to Garnett as a rookie, using his development physically as reassurance . I just wonder , should Davis keep a similar weight regardless of his efforts to gain as to whether he will be able to live up to expectations. Without weight gain I don’t see him getting in on the boards as effectively.

Secondly, despite his length, I’m not sure how we would go when he’s on weak side defense against a large centre, a Howard, Hibbert type. He currently will get outmuscled , but again, that’s only currently.

My final point is, will we know more about all the other prospects than we will about Davis? In order to justify every pick after him there has to be a lot more in depth analysis.

Anyway, I expect a few negs, but please leave comments to why you disagree too, just for some feedback for me,

    Cheers

We all know what we need to know about Davis.

    1. He’s LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG.

    2. He blocks shots.

    3. He plays defense.

    4. He can make shots.

    5. He can affect the game without dominating the ball.

    6. He’s a little skinny.

    7. His post game needs a little work.

    8. His ceiling is sky-high.

Is there anything else we NEED to know?

It is a fair question.. I would say we know enough about his game and we can never really be sure on how players builds will develop.. And with Davis that should be a huge concern. He is a great player but is built like a toothpick. There is no guarantee that he will ever develop any physical strength… I have some real doubts about how long his body will hold up.

He is without a doubt the No. 1 overall pick regardless.

Javale Mcgee entered the league with a similar frame and has filled out nicely.

4.7 blocks a game plus 1.4 steals. The kid was a beast on defense. He might get muscled around, but what are guys going to do after they’ve muscled him? You can’t shoot over him, it just won’t work. McGee is a great athlete and is a nice comparison but you have to understand that McGee was a much worse shot blocker that Davis was. And McGee was very good. Having Davis on the court gives you almost as many blocks as having two McGees. Crazy, huh?

But if you are saying that Howard will muscle him and have success, well you are talking about a probable hall of famer who is basically in his prime. Of course Howard will have success against Davis. I bet he does his normal 20 and 13 like he does against the rest of the league. I doubt Hibbert would do much since Hibbert won’t be able to get his shot off against Davis’s hops. Everyone will push him around, but when they lose him, he is going to be dunking a lob or blocking a shot into the second row.

By the way, if we were talking about points instead of shot blocks, we would be debating the merits of a guy who averages 40 a game. You wouldn’t be worried about how the guy was going to get better. You shouldn’t worry about Davis, he can get better, he will get better, but he is already very very good.

In 1993 a 7’6" bean pole averaging 5.2 bpg entered the NBA draft.  He was picked #2 overall, right after CWebb and right before Penny Hardaway and Jamal Mashburn.  "What will they do after they muscle him?"  It’s pretty simple:  They’ll  score, since he’s now under the rim.  At least that’s how it went w/Bradley.  He kept getting blocks, but people scored on him at a very high rate.

In fairness, Bradley was skinnier than Davis.  Bradley’s inability to put on weight really destroyed his career, making him the 13th man instead of the anchor of Philly’s D.  Getting outmuscled matters.

Davis is stronger than Bradley was and I expect him to add the needed bulk.  Almost everyone does–Bradley had a hyper metabolism or something that made it virtually impossible.  But if for some odd reason Davis can’t add bulk, he will not be a great player in the NBA.  That is really the only concern w/Davis as a prospect.

Worried about he will ger out muscled? maybe his first 2 years, but he wont defend Howard or Hibbert always, i believe he is a 4, not a 5, so if you are a PF you dont need more than 240-250 at 6 ´11, i am sure Davis could put 240 after two seasons, so dont worry about him being outmuscled his career, he wont defending Centers daily.

His skillset is that of a PF, he may play the 5 later in his career.

So how he will fare against the top 4´s of the league? Exluding Timmy and KG because they are on the sunset.

    Some examples:

Griffin, should abuse Davis on Post ups or Alleys (Posters), in his first year, but Blake would be blocked or his shot altered sometimes.

Kevin Love, more perimeter oriented and less athletic than Blake, no problem, Davis has shown good perimeter defense for a big. Also Kevin´s lenght is not that great and could be blocked even if he pushed Mr Unibrow.

Love will win the matchup, dont get me wrong, but Davis will not make that easy.

Lamarcus Alridge, This should be a nice Matchup, Alridge lenght and skill could prove to be difficult to defend.

Gasol could be a trouble even on the decline of his career, his post skills and lenght are great.

Al Jefferson and Zack Randolph: They will push davis, but neither have excellent lenght and could be disrupted sometimes.

i think Davis will held against more 4´s on the league, in two years weighting in the neighborhood of 240, could be a terror defensive PF, and maybe he has developed some high post moves, and be a problem in the pick and pop with his shot and pick and roll with his hands and finishing ability. Sorry for my english
