RUDEBOY_ParticipantWhen The Heat signed center Joel Anthony to a 5 year 18 million dollar contract..Heat president Pat Riley had this to say about the signing..”This contract with Joel Anthony is a testament of the man who is 2nd to none ,he has worked hard and deserve this..We felt that what he has done to over the past few years to improve his body and developing his game warrants this reward..
Now the Miami Herald is reporting that secretly Riley is now admitting that signing Anthony to that huge deal was a mistake..Last week 1 Heat official called the size of Anthony’s contract a joke…A NBA scout called it ridiculous..
Anthony is not a starter in this league..And when he’s given starter minutes his limitations are vastly overexposed.. He’s been that way since he’s been there and he’ll continue to be that way..Becuz he’s so undersized and so limited..Riley wasn’t looking for scoring from him ..He thought Anthony could provide energy, defense and rebounding ..Anthony can sometime give you those things but only in limited minutes…

sheltwon3ParticipantThere are tons of better players who did not get close to 3 plus million a year. I think 2 million a year for around 3 years would have been a good deal. I think Miami was nervous that he would go somewhere else and wind up like Bruce Bowen. Bowen was a Heat first and Heat let him go because of his limitations and Bown work himself into being a quality starter and someone who could hit open 3’s in the corner. Maybe they thought this guy could be the next Ben Wallace. I think it was a dumb deal. I would not do it.

sheltwon3ParticipantNba has the best of talents and the ones that do not work on the extreme don’t get to play. Hard work is for a good role players and in this economy good role players can be had for 1 million to 3 million. some teams have bargains for role players that are good that are less than a million.

sammybuckeye13ParticipantThe Heat in inexplicable desperation threw $18M at a 28 year old center with 3 years experience who would be an undersized center on most power conference college teams. Anthony is a solid post defender, but how did they expect the 6-9 Anthony to hang with the 6-11 Howard or 7-0 Gasol, for example? They drastically underestimated how easy it is to find a hard working post player.

PlatypusParticipantIts not all about his height, Ben Wallace vs Shaq when the Pistons won, Ben had him locked down, another example Dennis Rodman, nuff said
Its not height, its talent, if your undersized you can play with the big boys but you have to have the talent, Anthony does not

JoeWolf1I think they did, there is no doubt a defensive center that really doesn’t produce much on the points and rebounds, but alters shots and prevents people from driving the lane has value to an NBA team. BUT as a backup, he isn’t the first play of that sort that has been over payed. Your teams center doesn’t have to be 20/10 or ever 15/8 to win an NBA title, but your gonna need more than 5/5 IMO, especially when your giving him a pretty big contract.
Desagan Diop, Jim McIlvane, are two guys who come time mind when talking about similar players getting to much money for what they do. I get there is a weakness of starting centers in the NBA, but paying a backup like a starter isn’t going to make is ability jump from that of a backup to that of a starter!
Signing him to a smaller deal would have made much more sense, he hasn’t done anything to warrant that kind of money and even this year he really hasn’t played at a higher level than he did in any of his previous seasons. He’s a 6’9” Diop, McIlvane, or Sean Bradley as far as his role with the team and that isn’t worth 5 years and 18 million to me.

sammybuckeye13ParticipantI just think they rushed to get a blue-collar big man and Anthony, even though he’d played in south beach for a while, wasn’t the right fit. And the two undersized, lockdown defender big men you point out are Ben Wallace and Dennis Rodman, arguably the two best ever of their kind. Anthony is not near that company and it shows how rare truly successful undersized centers of that kind are.

NYK2010ParticipantPpl say Joel Anthony is a PF and Bosh more of a SF.
Ha should’ve signed Darko at least he has the size.
Also doesn’t help that Juwan Howard and Big Z are very old too.
No legit Center with a weak bench and Arroyo/Chalmers at PG hurts.

I think they should have signed Kwame Brown for the veteran minimum, and kept Anthony, just for a smaller salary.
It’s easier said than done, but if they were to find a way to get Kirk Hinrich I think he’d work out well there with his defense at the point guard position, ability to play next to star players and ability to hit the outside shot when Lebron and D-Wade kick it out of double teams.

sheltwon3ParticipantMaybe they sign him to something larger because they plan on moving him and a pick for a legit player that is probably getting paid a decent amount and havet to make the salary work. I have a feeling sometime this year he will be moved. This does not make too much sense though because Miami could have found a way to get Beasley if they gave this guy all that money.

If I’m the Heat, I want Kris Humpries and Janerro Pargo in trades plus Eric Dampier from free agency.
This team isin’t far off, they never really been out of any games other then the 1st one.
