AdamJCallejaParticipantThe site has him at #8 and I had no idea he was even on he radar for this upcoming draft. I’m totally unfamiliar with his game, can you guys fill me in on what makes the guy a top 10 pick

JDB12ParticipantDo you realize how many tall and black people with a seven foot wingspan there are? Does that mean they should all go in the lottery too?

Hype MachineGuys Guys Guys!…..there’s no need for this kind of heated discussion. Let me help you out with my own scouting report.
Deyonta Davis is a great prospect. He’s African American with a wingspan a couple of inches beyond 6’11".
His stock has really gone up from playing at Michigan State.
It’s not a particularly strong draft, which should help him move into the mid-lottery.

JDB12ParticipantHaha I know there are 14 selections in the lottery, but you just made it sound like every tall, black player with a seven foot wingspan would be good enough to make it into the lottery because they have said characteristics!

Hype MachineHow about the term ‘blackfella’.
Believe it or not….thats the polite, informal title given to an Australian Native.
Eg Patty Mills is a ‘Blackfella’

HadzialijagicParticipantState Fan here. Reason Deyonta is projected so high is that he has potential through the roof. Hes about 6’11 ish with freakish long arms. He is a very good athlete can play the 4 and the 5, and has bulked up considerably since he’s come to state. He is also flashed a good post game and the potential to be a very solid mid range shooter, he has really nice form on his shot. He is also a phenomenal shot blocker. His raw potential combined with being coached up by the likes of an Izzo have people excited for what he could be in the NBA. A player that can block shots, guard the 4 and 5, post up and hit mid range jump shots has a spot on any team in the league. He spent a good handful of minutes guarding Zak Irvin in their most recent game vs Michigan which is a testament to his defensive versatility.
Izzo is tough on the kid, making him earn his minutes, but I think it will prove to be beneficial for Davis’ development. His minutes have been limited by the outstanding play of Matt Costello and the existence of quality bigs like Gavin Schilling and Kenny Goins. But Izzo knows how important Davis is and he showed that by moving him into the starting lineup recently.
Davis could go top 10 this year and I really would not fault him at all for it. I do think though that on next years team though he could have a chance to go top 5. If Davis stays, wow next years team could be scary especially if they were to pick up Josh Jackson looking at a potential lineup of:
C Davis/ Schilling/ Goins
F Bridges/ Ward/ Clark Jr
F Jackson/ Bess/ Ellis
G Harris/ Langford/ Ahrens
G Winston/ Tum Tum/ McQuaid0 - Posted on: Tue, 02/09/2016 - 1:16am #1041575

ZachAttackParticipantFinally someone that actually told me why this kid is so good!!
Great Analysis BTW… I’ve watched only a couple of Michigan State games but he doesn’t really look ready for the NBA… I think he should stay another year to get better.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantTo be honest, I’ve watched msu several times this year and Davis hasn’t really stood out all that much. If this site wasn’t projecting him to go that high there would be nothing about his game that would make me think he’d be a top 10 pick right now. I agree he’s got good physical tools and could develop into a player someday, but right now he just isn’t a guy I could see having much of an impact right away.

JoeWolf1Really caught my eye during the HS All-Star game circuit. Not that any of those games are competitive, but because of the way he moves, and his physical make up. He hasn’t disappointed at MSU this season. He’s incredibly productive when he’s on the court, and has the ability to rebound and block shots in the NBA. Also, even though he’s young, and thin, he’s putting up 73.2% at the rim this season.
He could be a very good defensive role player. His rebounding and shot blocking can translate, but for him to be a special player he needs to continue to work on his game. The good thing? He can already do a couple things at a high level, and he’s got room to grow. I have to think he was a reason Caleb Swanigan changed his mind and went to Purdue, whether he’s willing to admit it or not.

mamadouParticipantI like him as a project, even more since he stopped the palm hair..,
Tristan Thompson was 4th, that kid has a higher ceiling, more raw skills, taller, better defender, shot blocker, better hands, better touch, better midrange game potential.
Another name of a frosh bigmen, Favors…he was a bit younger(drafted at 18), but their per 36 mins numbers were pretty similar and i think the ceiling/role of Davis is pretty much what Favors is doing now.
A solid 2 way PF/C, winning basketball.
Worth a lotto pick, in the 10-14 range, thinking Wizards…

r377ParticipantHe is athletic with a good vert, good wingspan. He can block and change a lot of shots. He doesn’t get a lot of looks on offense but the potential is there.
I really hate it when kids get drafted on “potential” without proving themselves first in college. I hope he comes back next year to work on his game. Would be nice to see him become a bit more of the focus on offense…
