Breaking story that Phoenix is finalizing a 5 year, $185 million dollar extension for Devin Booker.  That is pretty crazy that a guy who is only 21, has already played 3 NBA seasons and has become a borderline superstar.  Even more impressive since he was the 13th pick in the 2015 draft, and is only 21 years old.  Wow.  As a side note, I wonder if Phoenix management moved quickly to make the offer after cutting Booker’s close friend Tyler Ulis earlier in the week, and Booker making it known that he was pissed about it.  I guess $185 million can put a smile on anyone’s face though.  Thoughts?

It is overpaying. They won 60 games over three years with him. A lot of guys can fill it up on bad teams. They are projecting max-ish performance down the line, but guaranteeing max money. If he becomes a restricted free agent next summer and just matched the best offer, they would have him for less. That said, when Ayton, Jackson, Bridges, Reed, Chriss, and Bender are rookie scale, and Okobo will be rookie-ish in money for the next few years, it is acceptable. The rookie scale can subsidize the deal. The only time it can come back to bite them is if most of their rookie scale guys necessitate massive second deals, and his body fails him thus creating a fiscal alabatross. While that is possible, it is unlikely.

 That’s a bit much though for a guy who had one historic game in a loss. I agree with BTPH in terms of waiting for a team to pay him and match that offer. That would have been the best option for the Suns moving forward. He’s still developing his game though and could turn out to be a player worth that much but right now, I don’t see it.

 Great deal for the Suns to lock in one of the top young players in the league. People forget he’s younger than Donovan Mitchell. And if you have watched him play you can tell that he’s a winner and will continue to get better. Unfortunately he has played on horrible teams so he could not put together enough wins.  This contract will look like a bargain in a couple years.

 Thats more money than All-NBA or all-star players from the 90s and 00s were making for a career in many cases. We’re getting towards $500k a game here. I cant see the value  and that its sustainable looking at it from a business perspective. Booker is the star player for the Suns but he is potentially their 3rd best guy if Jackson and Ayton develop. Where to then? Its big coin.

 That’s a ton of money for a 21 year old only in his 3rd year in the league.  Calipari has the perfect recruiting pitch.  His players get PAID.  Devin Booker is good, but 185 mil good???

 Not hating on Booker, ’cause if they’re gonna offer that much you damn sure better take it, but this is an insane deal. He’s a dude who’s put up good offensive numbers on ATROCIOUS teams, plays no defense, hasn’t helped them win, and was injured most of last year. I get that he’s still quite young, but outside of him dropping 30 a night on a playoff contender, this is a terrible deal.
