lalailaParticipantI think he could be in the lottery. What do you guys are thinking?
He avg 19ppg9rpg in only 23mpg already. He is like a grown man 6’9 around 245 and still VERY athletic..and he was Favors type of freshman so he will be only 19yrs old for all this season.

JNixonParticipantHe seems to be closer to 6’7 or 6’8 than 6’9 and closer to 230 than 245. He does seem to be a late lotto to top 20 pick though. He’s a solid athlete and a tough and physical guy down low who will work to score. I think he will be a serviceable PF who can either be a decent starter or be a very good bench player. I don’t have a comparison for him, but I think he’ll be a solid player.

llperezinteresting player. I have been hyping him as the best college player in the pac 10 in terms of conference player of the year and being a 20-10 guy. But i do questoin his pro potential. He is very aggressive, has good hands attack sthe rim, decent athlete. Has all the tools. But he just isnt that big and he doesnt really move guys around at the college level let alone at the pro level. I think he is closer to 6-8 and he really doesnt look like 240. If he can add some bulk and continue to develop his face up game, i could see hm being similar to a david west type that faces up and uses pick and pops to do most his damage.

scoutguruParticipantI like him for this year as a 1st rounder. Could be top 10 for sure next year. Seems like an undersized 4 to me. I haven’t seen him play yet this year, but last year his post moves were really refined for a frosh, he showed a lot of skill in that area, but he didn’t show much to me on the perimeter, and at his size he’d project more of a three to me, or maybe a face up 4 in certain lineups. He reminds me of Ryan Gomes when he was in school, who had similar frame, and played mainly in the post. However, Gomes senior year, he almost transformed his game so he’d be able to play the three in the league, which I think DWill will project better as. But I guess at this point he’s an undersized 4, but he got game though and I was really impressed with him last year. And yeah, he look more on the 6’7, maybe 6’8 with shoes type, around 235 maybe. Can’t wait to see that Kansas game coming up, should be a good matchup with him and the Morris twins goin at it…

JNixonParticipantTo me, the only think different about him and Thomas is that he’s not the athlete/shot-blocker. In terms of how they play/skill set/moves, he’s not very different from Tyrus Thomas.
I like the Jonas Jerebko comparison wayyyy more though. I forgot about him since he’s been hurt. That is about as perfect a comparison as their is.
Williams isn’t like West because West is stronger and more of a mid-range scorer than Williams, who plays much more of a back to the basket style. Williams also gets a bunch of scoring off of scrap play and isn’t the kind of passer that West is.

plasticmanParticipantI agree the West comparison is far from perfect but it still seems more accurate than others. Similar height, Williams could bulk up significantly to be about West’s size. Both skilled offensively and lacking defensively. Average rebounders. And neither could be considered traditional back-to-the-basket guys, since both like to face up. With some more polish I think Williams couls improve his mid range game a lot. They are not clones of eachother but the are cut from the same mold.
I just don’t see the Tyrus comparison for a couple reasons in addition the the obvious athleticism gap. First of all their bodies are not the same at all. Williams can hold way more weight on his frame and will not get bullied like Thomas still does at times. Also Tyrus was such a raw player offensively and still is. Derrick has the skills to average 18-20ppg right now, something Thomas could never have done that even if he had stayed all 4 years. I just don’t see it at all. Give me an example of how they have a similar skillset.

JNixonParticipantI VERY seriously doubt Williams becomes an 18-20 ppg scorer in the NBA. It could happen, but I doubt it.
I think they have similar skill sets because both score using jump hooks and occasional mid-range shots, and in transition at times. Williams is more of a banger and stronger, and not as athletic, but he looks to score and he’s about the same level a rebounder and man-to-man post defender as Thomas is. The play the same way in a bunch of facets of the game, Thomas just has an athleticism advantage and is a bit less strong.
Jonas Jerebko is the best comparison though, since they are the same level athlete and have similar physical ability, along with identical styles of play.

JoeWolf1Williams biggest asset it his his persistance and ability to get to the line, IMO. The Jerebko comparison is decent, but he isn’t a guy who really gets to the line. I think he’ll be a valuable role player in the NBA, but a guy who earns a lot of his living at the FT line.

Mr. 19134ParticipantThe David West comparisons aren’t that far fetched. Derrick Williams despite being extremely young is still extremely productive. He got a ton of room for growth. He looks to have a nice wingspan over 7 foot meaning he shouldn’t have that much trouble playing power forward in the league.
And what the hell does a true PF Beasley mean?
Do you realize Mike is averaging over 21 points ppg this year and if he didn’t play alongside that rebounding machine Love would probably be averaging around 22 and 8. If Derrick Williams ever comes close to that production as a pro i’d be shocked.
