What’s the deal with this guy? Haven’t heard or seen much from him pretty much since he’s gone pro. How’s his game developed? What kind of potential do people still hope from him? What is his contract situation? Seems like a few years ago I always heard people talk about his big potential and then I stop hearing about him…do the Jazz plan on him being apart of their future with all that future cap space of theirs’…just kind of curious because Utah seems to have a lot of questions to answer this summer with the upcoming draft and their like 40 million in cap space.

He signed a 4 year 49 million contract extension back in October so he will probably be a member of the Jazz for awhile.

He’s finally getting more minutes (30 minutes per game) and he’s averaging a career high in points per game (13.5) and rebounds (9.3). He’s thought to be the most important player on the Utah Jazz team with Trey Burke and Gordon Hayward. He’s turned into a very good defensive and rebounding player on the Jazz team. Also in the month of January before he had a hip injury that has kept him out of the past 3 games he had been averaging 14ppg, 10rpg, and 1blk. He has been the defensive anchor on that team. I think that he has his shortcomings offensively but with Trey Burke now on the team they’ve been running the pick and roll much better and Derrick has been scoring more points with better efficiency. And, for 4 years and $49 million I think that the Jazz got a steal for a guy who could be there defensive anchor for years to come. He has great size and strength for either post position at 6’10 with a 7’4 wingspan and 268lbs. And, he’s still maintained the great athleticism he entered the league with only with more strength.

I think a big reason he wasn’t getting much shine though his career has been a number of factors. He’s spent the past 3 years backing up Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson so he hasn’t been getting much minutes. And the fact that the Utah Jazz team isn’t good (which isn’t any fault of his own). The Utah Jazz despite their bad record have a ton of good young talent in Alec Burks, Trey Burke, Enes Kanter, Gordon Hayward, and Derrick Favors. They are all now getting the minutes and game experience they never received in the past. I think they are a good scorer (Jabari Parker) away from making some real noise in the NBA.

Come to think of it that 2010 NBA draft class he came from is pretty damn stacked with good players. Of the top 10 drafted only 3 are below average players. The rest of them are pretty damn good John Wall, Evan Turner (finally having a good year), Derrick Favors, DeMarcus Cousins, Greg Monroe, Gordon Hayward, and Paul George.

Yeah 4 years $49 mill that’s pretty solid on Utah’s end. I just wondered because being a Piston fan I was trying to compare what Greg Monroe might demand dollar wise to similar players and what they got. Considering I’d probably pay Favors more money than Monroe that’s kind of comforting to know.

From what I have heard Favors likes Utah and didn’t want to go through this year with free agency looming over his head so he told his agent to get the contract done and that is why Utah got him at a discount.

He would have gotten a better offer on the open market but maybe it will still help set the price for Monroe.

I think by the end of his 4 year deal, he’ll make an All-Defensive team. I really like his defensive potential, and I took a look at his shooting numbers not too long ago and he has been slowly expanding that element of his game

No, I don’t see him going Karl Malone and start being a deadly pick and pop mid-range threat, but he’s made improvements. It’s a nice improvement jump in his game this season, IMO. He’s also become a high 60s FT shooter as a defensive minded power forward, by age 22.

    2012-13

    All-Jumpers .283%

    10-16 ft – .365%

    16-3 point range – .258%

    2013-14

    All-Jumpers .348%

    10-16 ft – 39%

    16-3 point range – 31%

Yeah, the Jazz blow, but Favors can play D and is expanding his offensive game too. I really like his potential, and I think Favors is a 16 ppg 11 rpg player in his prime who is a regular on All-Defensive teams.

As Derrick was backing up Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap for 3 years, he maybe has not developed as much as some would have liked. But he looked good in his bench minutes which were also limited as Kanter had to be fitted in and this season has made nice progress as a starter putting up a near double-double in stats.

We have to remember that Derrick is still only 22 years old so he will develop maybe a bit later in his NBA career compared to older draftees in the 2010 draft and those who saw more playing time earlier than he did.

For a big man of his age and upside, $49 million over 4 years was a very good deal for Utah and a fair one for Derrick. Plus with him resigned he has been able to concentrate on playing and not have any contract distractions.
