JoeWolf1Now that Derek Character has a fresh start at UTEP do you think he’ll reach his potential? Once thought as first rounder after a year or two of college, he has a ton of natural ability, but was such a head case and struggled to stay in shape for Rick Pitino. He is only a junior eligibility wise and I still have my doubts, but do you think a change in scenery and a little maturity will be enough for him to get drafted in 10 or 11?

Da1potParticipantNope… he is a lost talent. He is incredibly lazy and has absoleutly no work ethic.

JNixonParticipantI want to believe he makes a JR Giddens-esque leap in maturity, but he showed up to Summer drills about 65 lbs overweight (his mandatory playing weight was 260, and he showed up 325). That shows me he still doesnt get it. For a player with as much natural talent as he has, I never get why basketball isnt priority #1. Some take the opportunity for granted. Even though he’s a gifted player, he probably wont get drafted. He will have a chance to play in Summer League and the D-League’s though.

Henry25Participantdamn i wish. watchin him play against Oden at ABCD Camp, u couldve made a real solid argument that Character was the better and more talented player. It drives me crazy that he doesn’t work hard because he could be a beast. If he really gets his weight issues together and dominates like he is capable of then i can see someone drafting him late first round or early sencond. But unfortunatley the chances of that happening are slim to none. It’s a shame that he is throwing away such a great talent

JoeWolf1I hear you man, I remember watching him his freshman year at Louisville and he showed flashes of being a dominant post player. I knew he had some weight and maturity issues, but I attributed it to him being 18 years old. Unfortunately, his sophomore year it was very clear he didn’t come to play. I’d love to see him turn it around, I didn’t know he showed up 65 lbs over this summer, but hopefully he can get it going, because your right Henry, he could be a beast down low if he really wanted it.

wridan49ParticipantI went to High School with Derek. Back then he looked like he had an amazing amount of talent. Unfortunitly I believe he has had the attitude and effort problem since way back then. Everyone thought he was going places in this game but it turned out to let all of those hopes down. I hope UTEP can be a fresh start fro him and that he can get drafted this year or maybe next. Lots of work ahead but we can hope for the best.
