TheMOSTHATEDoneParticipantDenzel Valentine is a degree of athleticism below the ideal 2 guard position and he may not be able to contain most PG in todays NBA.
But still he has an incredible toolset to offer: great wingspan, he has that old school feel to the game, the change of speeds, ball fakes, the BKB IQ, top notch passing ability, money on his jumpers, outstanding free throw shooter and NBA ready game.
His cons are not so numerous, not a supreme athlete, average laterally, 4th year guy, so you can think there is not so mush to discover in the tank, not so strong upper body.
How do you see his game translating in the NBA? position? possible NBA future or production?

lalailaParticipantStar or not, even starter or not but one thing I see… he will really get a few triple doubles every year

Sewok15ParticipantIf you are supposedly one of the best players in the country how are you going to not even attempt a foul shot in a game that watches your team get eliminated from the tourney. It doesn’t matter how well you can shoot free throws if you can’t get to the line.
He will have a future in the NBA but his lack of athleticism will be his downfall. Maybe he can be a good 6th man because he seems like he needs the ball more than any decent starting unit would allow.

MopgrassParticipantConsidering his lack of speed, but his good wingspan, I’d consider him at the 3 actually. He should be able to knock it down from pro 3 and he can obviously pass. At best, he could have a Nic Batum type role (not a comparison). He’d just need a little muscle.

morestealsthanscoresParticipantah man, devastated for him in terms of the NCAA tournament.
In terms of the NBA – right now, he’s a role-player, and he’d have to alter his physique quite dramatically (a la Draymond) to step further than that.
As a role player, he’s got a rare combination of playmaking and shotmaking ability. However, he does need the ball in his hands to be effective – I can’t see him sprinting round screens to get open, or beating a guy down the floor.
Like loads of guys in this draft, I think his effectiveness is going to TOTALLY depend on what type of situation he ends up in. If he finds himself alongside a point guard that is comfortable as a spot up shooter, and in a team that can cover his defensive deficiencies, he could be fantastic. But given how many excellent point guards there are in the league right now, there’s only so many of these situations that exist.
My favourite two situations for Valentine – if he ends up going to Indiana (currently picking 19th) he’ll be in a GREAT situation – a spot-up point guard (George Hill), a league leading defense, a main scoring option (Paul George) and a organisation that’s great at developing talent. Just look at how effective Lance Stephenson was in a similar, playmaking-2 role (and how his career plummeted when taken out of that situation).
And secondly – Detroit at #15 would suit him well too – they play a half court style, Drummond would provide defensive cover and easy 3 point looks, and Reggie Jackson is a pretty adaptable player. He’d provide a really different look from KCP – I could see him leading their second unit, and eventually starting if KCP’s development slows.

ExumInfernoParticipantEvan Turner does most of everything, and while his position isn’t totally defined he is often thought of as a small forward, or point forward. Valentine can do that, without the pressure of being a top 3 pick. He may not be top 10, so he will end up at a solid team that needs him to contribute but not star.
Toronto, Chicago, Indiana, he could land at one of them and be a very good 6th Man type very quickly. For the Pacers, he could start when they go small with George at PF.
At Charlotte, a good fit. Atlanta too. Phoenix could work too.
A mini D Green or K Love, a bigger Andre Miller with an outside shot, a faster Kyle Anderson but with a better shot, he should help whatever team he gets to in a bunch of ways.
