couch gmParticipantThought I’d start a thread looking at Denver’s needs and who they should target. I feel like this draft is deep in the sense that at 20 there should be some quality players available that won’t be much worse than the 2nd pick (Davis is clearly the number one guy). This being said, and knowing the unpredictability of the draft, here are three different scenarios and my ranking of them based upon my personal preference and the likelihood of them occurring.
1. Denver takes Doron Lamb.
Lamb is a guy who has key contributor as a role player for a championship team written all over him. A lights out shooter with range who can handle the ball at times and get to the hoop on occasion, Lamb is the ideal fit for a Nugs team who are desperate for a consistent outside threat. Denver struggled in games were they couldn’t dictate the tempo last season – their half court offense stuggled at times because teams would pack the paint and prevent Lawson’s penetration without fear of someone going off from outside. Lamb would stretch the floor for us, making our two primary ball handlers Lawson and Gallo far more effective. Lamb rarely makes mistakes and has a high basketball IQ, plus he is likely to be available when we make our selection.
2. Denver takes Terrence Ross
Ross is another guy who shoots well from the outside. He is more athletic and longer than Lamb, and is also a better defender. He is basically a JR Smith with better D. However, the guy doesn’t create well for others and is someone who I feel will need the ball in their hands a lot. With Ty, Gallo and potentially J-Ham also needing the ball to be effective I feel Lamb’s ability off the ball, coupled with his better IQ is what makes him a better fit. Ross most probably has the higher ceiling but he is also more likely to be gone by the time the Nugs select.
3. Denver takes Sullinger
I think this is least likely based on Sullinger being a lotto talent, but due to his back injury and lack of athleticism I could see him dropping to us. This guy has been over-analysed beyong belief and on the right team I feel he can be a very effective NBA player. His post game, ability to hit perimiter shots from the four position and rebounding are much needed for a team that currently has no consistent post threat and no four who can stretch the game and box-out (Al buckets is basically a slow 3). His lack of athleticism is a concern, but the guy was a legit 6’9” at the combine in shoes and his body fat percentage surprised me. His injury is something that will be more of an annoyance for him rather than something major moving forward. Off the bench for this team his weaknesses could be covered for by our athletic, long bigs who can pick up the slack on D (assuming Javel continues to make strides). He would open up our half court offense by providing a low post presence that we sorely need, plus an option popping off the pick. I think this would be my personal preference but I think its unlikely that someone else doesn’t take a chance on him before Denver.

couch gmParticipantThat’s my big worry, that all these guys are likely to go higher. I suppose I can see the potential for a 2 guard to slip when you consider that between Waiters, the two Lambs, Beal, Ross, Rivers and guys like Wroten and Lilliard who aren’t true points you’ve got 8 guys who play like 2 guards to distribute between the prior 19 picks. Sullinger is a bit of a pipe dream. I think Doron’s most likely to be available.
And you read my mind, gotta put it work to keep that pick!
