How was Dejaun passed on only to fall to who else but the masters of the late pick, Spurs. I know he showed up at 6’6.5 but he had the girth at 277 and the wing span at 7’2 longer then Blake Griffin’s, Jordan Hill’s, BJ Mullens’, Tyler Hansbourgh’s and Dante Cunningham’s. Along with the production in the deepest and arguably best conference in college basketball. He averaged over 5 offensive rebounds a game and was conference player of the year his final season. I understand he was shorter but I think you look past that. Trevor Booker was only an inch taller and didn’t have the girth or production yet he was a first round pick the next year. For a while this site had him in the first round where he belonged, good job, because now he is leading all sophomores in rebounding and number 9 in efficency. He as been on a tear this month averaging 15.2 and 10.2 in 30 minutes. With his developed floater that seems to work everytime and his improvong shot selection I think come playoff time with a fresh Duncan they will be the top duo in the league. His numbers aren’t a huge improvement from last and Roy Hibbert might be in line for the award but with his improved impact on the game he should be considered for MIP.

I think scouts were afraid of another Michael Sweetney (and of course the whole no knees thing was pretty scary). Production in college doesn’t always mean production in the NBA. Dejuan Blair just happened to be a boom or bust prospect, and luckily for the Spurs, he was a big boom. And bringing up Trevor Booker is a good point, and maybe Dejuan’s success as a rookie was the reason for his first round pick. Great points, Dejuan is a solid player.

Alot can be said about the second round of that draft. Jerebko is a solid player for Pistons (he’s just being downplayed because of his injury), Sam Young is doing well these days. Jodie Meeks is giving another dimension to the 76ers offense. Chase Budinger could be good if Houston wasn’t so crowded at the wing. We all know what Marcus Thornton is capable of, it’s too bad Monty Williams doesn’t. I like Mills and Price as back up PGs as well. Dejuan Blair is the headliner of that group though.

He has lost a considerable amount of weight, and isn’t 277 lbs anymore. He is still a bit of a deficiency defensively because he is a 6’6" power forward that can’t jump, but he is moving his feet better this year (that combined with the weight loss is why his minutes are up). I get crushed for saying this, but put him on that crappy Minnesota team in place of Love and he gobbles up every point and rebound. The fact remains though that he is on a winner, and numbers get sacrificed for Ws.

Blair is just another example of how great the spurs pick their players. I hope they continue to find players like him, gary neal, and george hill considering it will be extremelly hard to find another timmy, manu, or tony after the big 3 retires.

Blair feasts on weak frontcourt teams, and absolutely destroys thin fowards. He has like 6-points, 5-rebounds, 4 offensive  in the final 2 minutes in Toronto as the only big on the floor for San Antonio. Give m,cuh credit to the horrible T.O. frontcourt but thats still amazing. Slow start to the year but his role has adapted and hes catching stride yet again.

Tim Duncan has said that he wants to play as long as his body allows. Part of the reason the Spurs are the organization that they are is that they realize the relative insignificance of the regular season to a contender. It makes absolutely no sense to play Tim Duncan, Manu, and Parker 35 minutes a game when they don’t need to. Playing them less now will make them better for longer.

Theres probably about 15 teams he wouldnt have made it on in this league. He is definately a fit type of player, and they got it right. But ya he was a huge steal, everybody knew it.

I think it was mostly the knees thing, and that his 6’6 measurement was in shoes, which is really small, because even guys who are 6’7 are pretty undersized. I can see how it happened I guess but it was dumb. That was a bad draft too, at the top, but is showing to have been very deep.

Also when he weighed 277 he had a 33 inch vert and now at 265 I would assume it is slightly better. Not to mention jumping doesn’t have that much to do with defense, sure altering shots everynow and then, but give me good footwork and a man that does’nt get pushed around in the post over a leaper any day.
