 I read an article the other day that Drummond might explore the idea of shooting under hand free throws like Rick Barry. If Deandre Jordan would do this and increase his FT%, your looking at a dominant player who can lead the clippers with the right pieces around him. I hope this becomes a trend for poor FT shooters to help increase their %. I think Drummond and Jordan are dominant right now, but can become so much better if they shot better at the line.

 I think anytime you are shooting under 50%, you need to do whatever it takes to improve your shot. I know it looks stupid, but if you can’t even make 1 for 2 and your that much of a liability to your team, then it’s a no brainer to try anything. They better do it if they want to win.

I think for a lot of these guys free throws become mental. Watch Wilt Chamberlain practicing his next one after missing the first or Shaq and his hesitation. You miss, you miss some more, you change your shot, miss some more, change your shot again, keep missing, etc. It’s not just about changing your shot. When I would try to teach people to shoot, the hardest part was getting them to commit to what I was teaching them because in the process of fixing their shot, they are going to experience some real failure so the first thought is "Why should I keep listening to you?" People assume that the way they are used to is better because they would hit more shots the way they were comfortable with or would be "closer." The people that stuck with it would eventually improve and it was always easier to teach people that never played because they didn’t have all the bad tendencies or ideas of what they thought was right. For guys that have been playing for years, they have been experiencing a lot of failure at the line and likely different teachers and changes to their form.

Should going underhand be an option for Jordan? I think it’s worth a try. When you shoot that low of a percentage your shot is broken. I just wonder why people are so surprised that he is a terrible free throw shooter. He takes about 5-6 shots a game for his career and those are right at and around the basket. The way he has been used, he’s never going to develop into anything more than what he is. He’s just told to follow the ball around and would probably find himself on the bench if he tried to do any more than that.

 Chinanu Onuaku from Louisville switched to granny style this past year and his FT percentage jumped around 13%. Albeit he still only shot 59% for the season but it certainly is better than the 46% he shot the year before. The thing with Jordan though is that it looks like he has decent form, but his confidence is just shot. It doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t be better shooting underhand, but it is simply an observation. With Drummond, his FT form is a disaster and would definitely improve from a change in form. Hopefully he has the balls to actually make the switch.

He obviously must tense up and his freethrow mechanics fall apart under this pressure. So I would think underhanded freethrows are more simple and easy to replicate and convert in NBA game time situations. So I really hope he changes this and doesn’t care about the image of going underhanded.

 It’s weird how free throw shooting can mentally mess with some people.  I saw on the recent 30/30 series that Nick Anderson after missing those 4 free throws in a row to ice the game for the Magic against the Rockets in the 95 finals went from  70% shooter to 40% the very next year.

 It is supposed to be entertainment.  Instead of bricking shots, doing something from the 60s and maybe hitting a few extra shots would be something to watch.

I change the channel on many free throws, but if they are underhand then I would watch, for the novelty.
