IlladelphParticipantDeAndre Ayton is generally regarded as if not the top high school basketball player in America, one of the top guys. He is in the class of 2017, and one would think that every major program would be all over him. However, the only major high level program recruiting him is Kansas. Ayton denies eligibilty issues, and adamantly states that he will be going to college here. He also states that the only major program recruiting him is Kansas. A brief Google search will show several articles detailing that Kentucky, Duke, and other elite programs are not interested in recruiting the guy.
This seems very odd to me. If he truly is "NCAA eligible", and plans on going to college, as he claims, then why is Calipari, or K, or Roy Williams, or other big name coaches not pursuing the guy? What are we missing here? And what does Bill Self know that no one else knows since Self is, according to Ayton, the only big name coach talking to him?
Thoughts?

he_gets_bucketsParticipantI’ve heard over these forums over the years that he has some attitude/character issues, doesn’t always work to improve, coasts a lot. Perhaps these issues are putting bigger programs off? Would seem very silly if that were the case, surely there is some eligibility concern that we aren’t aware of

HitsterParticipantVery interesting points by both guys above so a +1 for me for each of them.
If there were eligability issues surely they would have come to light by now and other guys with character issues have always been recruited.
Mike K has a couple of big name recruits already but rarely does Cal not go after top guys hard and I’d figure a solid college coach would back himself to look to improve a guy with character issues.
There must be something we aren’t fully aware of.

evantomesParticipantIt’s not character issues. Sure he shows negative body language time to time but he’s not over the top. I wouldn’t label him as a hot head or anything. He did claim that Kansas is the only school recruiting him because no one else thinks he would be eligible.

OhCanada-ParticipantI agree Ayton has shown to be a bit immature but hes a teenager and that doesn’t really matter for NCAA evaluators because it is their job essentially to provide maturity. The NBA evaluators would care a lot more.
Maybe there are better options. Is that so crazy?
It seems like Colleges have doubts about Aytons intentions and eligibility. If a team like Kentucky were to sign Ayton then miss out on Carter or Bamba just to have Ayton ineligible or go pro they would miss out on a top tier big man.
Seems to me this class has some good bigs available. Ayton, Bamba, Carter, Preston and McCoy are all guys that are available and should have an instant impact in the paint. Guys like Tilmon, Richards are just behind then there are some high potential guys that might rise up towards the end of the year like Uyaelunmo, Gak and Culver.
That combined with the fact that both Duke and Kentucky will have lots of talent leftover from the 2016 recruiting class in their frontcourt neither team is in a rush to invest interest in a source that is less reliable.

ncballerDuke has Wendall Carter pretty much bagged up. And just from stuff I have heard, I don’t buy that he has no red flags, and in spite of what he says about wanting to play in college most people that would know tell me they would be shocked if he played in college.

BlueRivers25ParticipantCarter to Duke is not a done deal yet. Duke is going after both Bamba and Carter.

OhCanada-ParticipantTeams in play are Kentucky, Duke, UNC, Harvard, Kansas and pretty much all the major Georgia teams.
The reason why so many people assume Carter will get wrapped up by Duke is because he really cares about academics so much that even Harvard is still on his list. Duke provides the best combination of Academics and Basketball. Also rumours have it that he may want to do a package deal with Gary Trent Jr.
One Coach Wendell has a great relationship with is Roy Williams which should keep UNC in play as well.
He has official visits to Kentucky and Harvard coming up unless those already happened. If I were a betting man I would bet Duke is in the lead but this things far from wrapped up.

ncballerThe reason that I am confident about Carter to Duke is because several people who have never failed me have told me he will go there. One even thinks he has already silent verbaled. He is not going to UNC. Everytime he has had a chance to visit, he doesn’t. Very similar to Jayson Tatum.
