TarHeelRavenParticipantage 83, one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all-time. 879 wins, 2 national titles, 11 final fours. Dean Smith is the staple of UNC basketball and has meant everything to the community and the university. He still was influential even after he retired in 1997. Roy Williams credits Dean Smith for his success and emulates his style of play after him. The Dean Dome is one of the most iconic arenas in all of college basketball. RIP to a great man, mentor and basketball coach. Dean Smith will truly be missed.

RUDEBOY_Participantkind of remarkable that in his 36 yrs as head coach of unc, he had only 1 losing season that was his first year….
vince carter is the only remaining player in the nba he coached…the players on his teams were all so fundamentally sound, even most of the big men could shoot, dribble and pass…..thats what made his teams so enjoyable to watch..
but there were times when they would go to ”stall ball” it wasnt fun to watch…..

agentoaktreeParticipantRead his autobiography my Freshman year of HS and learned countless lessons from it that go way beyond hoops. This man truly had a passion for people that went beyond his desire to coach and his love for the game.

HitsterParticipantInteresting to know Vinsantity is his last player remaining in the NBA. He coached some other very good players such as James Worthy, Jerry Stackhouse, Antwan Jamison apart from of course MJ.
When you look at the length of some of those guys’ careers, it showed how well Dean must have drilled the good practices into them.
I wonder if MJ ever tried to tempt him out of retirement when he was running the Wizards. It makes you wonder what Coach Smith would have done with some of MJ’s draft picks or perhaps guide him to better choices.
Huge respect to this guy who walked away to enjoy his retirement when he was still at the top of his profession.
