Tongue-Out-Like-23Participant"He was just manipulating the refereeing or trying to," Stern said in a televised interview during the game. "I would have fined him much more than our office did. But I tell you what, I think it’s a legitimate concern. Some years ago, I told the competition committee that we were going to start fining people for flopping and then suspending. … It’s not a legitimate play in my judgment."

Don’t know how this will show up, I’m on my phone.
Reading through the post-game recap of the Pacers v Heat, apparently Stern was interviewed and said he wanted to fine players and then suspending! This is exactly what I’ve been saying!
For once, I agree with David Stern!

mookieParticipantJust read that article! Finally a move everyone will love Stern for! Jeff van gundy has been saying it in his broadcasts for years now! Fine Floppers!

GrandmamaParticipantI was actually going to post something about flopping and having fines for flops. What I was going to suggest was have a few guys watch each and every game, make a note of each flop, and then fine each player if it’s concluded that someone did indeed flop. I was going to say maybe 5k or 10k per flop. That will definitely change guys minds about flopping in the future and would be a constructive way to get this bullsh*t out of the game.

llperezi remember stern bringing this up a couple years ago and then it just went silent and wasnt mentioned any more. I think they could maybe fine the most obvious of flops, but i wouldnt want to see them fine everytime someone exagerrates a whistle. Its human nature to overreact sometimes to get the officals attention. But yeah super obvious flops are lame and make the sport look bad.

aamir543ParticipantI agree with fining floppers, it’s a cheap move and should result in severe consequences, good move.
And since we’re talking about David Stern, am I the only one that thinks that at halftime, he went into the refs lockeroom and said, "WTF are you guys doing!? We can’t have Indiana potentially in the Finals, it would kill ratings! Only 16 free throws! I want a foul everytime Lebron or Wade gets touched, is that understood!", which resulted in 22 second half free throws, making 38 for the game.

bloodshyParticipantI back this 100% Stop the NBA from becomming a futbol-like flop fest.

UNCbasketballbumParticipantFloppers are an embarrassment and ruin the game of basketball. When you see a 6’9′ 250 pound guy get bumped and then go flying across the floor, it pisses me off. I wrote a post a little while ago and am glad other people share my sentiments about flopping. Fines and suspensions should follow habitual floppers.

NbanflguyParticipantI couldnt agree more. I hate floppers with a passion.

HaleParticipantProbably the 1st time I’ve ever agreed with something David Stern has said.

river09ParticipantThey shouldn’t jump straight to fining. Instead why not just have refs call a flop by a player as a foul on the player who flopped…? If they keep just calling offensive fouls players will keep flopping and giving dimes for fines especially if it helps them win…

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantIt should be a:
- Technical Foul in-game
- Fine after the game
- Suspension after a set amount of flopping technicals.
- The suspension fuse gets shorter after each suspension and fines get larger.

Counting StarsParticipantThis has been coming for at least 12 years. It’s about time someone recommended a little integrity for the game.

HotSnotParticipantThe Supreme Court couldn’t properly identify P. O. R. N. in writing outside of saying “I’ll know it when I see it”. How do you expect the NBA and its ref’s to manage something like this? Whats a flop in my eyes may not be in yours. Soccers been around forever and they couldn’t get rid of it in any fair way.
So lets say the refs have discretion… how about a play like when the offensive player is driving the lane and gets stripped, but also flails his arms in the air. The arm flailing doesn’t affect the foul call but is designed to bring attention to the play itself. A pronounced physical expression is more likely to get the ref to sponataneously blow his whistle. Its so hard to judge something like that. Sometimes its real, other times players like Kobe and Wade tend to exaggerate.
Makes me think the rule should be geared towards exaggerating any natural play for the purpose of misrepresenting the act.
If the play is deemed insignifigant, but a flop still occurs? Like if a tree falls in the woods, but no ones around to hear it, does it still make a sound? Do we insist every flop, on every play be called untill the players smarten up? Like a flop away from the ball? What about when players get “hit” but ly on the floor like they got shot? You know they’re exaggerating by drawing it out and not just popping back up.
What about a “small flop”? Joel Anothny does this all the time on his picks at the top of the key. He lets the offensive player hit him and then roles his upper body back while seperating his arms. I know its small but he’s doing it so the refs won’t ever call his picks illegal. Since he’s exaggerating the movement should that count?
Drawing the line at whats a flop and whats not, while also trying to decide the type of flops that matter to the outcome of the game can be dicey. It will all be a judgement call, all the time.
All that will happen is players will become better floppers. Perhaps more subtle.

Jlv2012They should be suspended for one. Multiple repeaters(ex: Flop City) will result in multigame suspensions. The NBA is soft enough these days. Don’t need floppers making it any worse.
