NBA commissioner David Stern will announce late Thursday that he is retiring on Feb. 1, 2014, multiple sources tell ESPN.com’s Marc Stein.

Stern, 70, has been the NBA’s commissioner since Feb. 1, 1984. Last December, at the time a new collective bargaining agreement was announced, he predicted it would be the final labor deal before he steps down.

"This is a 10-year (labor) deal, with a re-opener at six," Stern said at the time, explaining that either the owners or the players union can opt out after six seasons. "I’m not planning to be here certainly for the 10 and probably not the six."

I don’t think any of us can argue that he hasn’t been the best Comissioner in any sport ever.  With the help of athletes like Yao, Jordan, LeBron, Kobe, Magic, and Bird, he turned basketball into a global sport, with the game being televised in over 240 countries and 40 different languages.  A true ambassador of the game and although it’s time to see him leave (albeit in 15 months), you never want to see someone who did such a good job walk away.

And the first picks he gets to introduce in his first time doing the first round in the draft in 2014 are Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker and Julius Randle.

He really has done a lot of good things, I know a lot of people hate him and some may have good reasons, but overall he did a really good job I think.

Adam Silver is insanely smart but he’s not very personable, and I’m not sure he can take the heat like Stern did, much less shoot back witty remarks. Will be interesting to see what the Knick fans do to Adam when he’s walking up to announce the #1 pick.

Shoot back witty remarks? Like the "Have you stopped beating your wife"?

I’m surprised everybody is singing serenades to Stern, everybody always seemed to hate him and said he ruined the league, didn’t they? I’ve seen that multiple times on these forums and such remarks were faced with next to no critisism

I always thought Stern was a bit of a self-loving prick to be honest, he might be a good professional, the NBA really is popular almost all around the world now but I still never liked him

I hate him and will be happy to see him go, but it’s hard to deny all he has done for the NBA.

He stated he’s leaving on Feb. 1st 2014,which is right in the middle of the season and around the all star break….I wonder why he isnt going to retire at the end of the season?

Like alot of people that stay in 1 place Too Long, they can sometimes Wear Out their welcome…Players, coaches and some in the front office seem to had grown tired of him and he had grown tired of the job..Years ago he use to give precised detailed answers in interviews…But in recent years when talking to the press he seem grumpy and displayed an arrogant attitude….During the lockout,he said some shocking things that seem to upset mild mannered guys like Derrick Rose & Wade…

But one day Stern will take his place among the great contributors to the game of basketball and be elected to the Hall of Fame…Because besides Naismith, there are only a few others that can say they’ve done more for the nba then he has..
