kingoftheplaygroundParticipantWhere do you guys think Darko would have been selected in the 2003 draft if the Pistons would not have picked him ? Do you think he still would have went top 5 ? 10 ? I remember hearing Jay Bilas talking about how either he or LeBron would be the first pick of the draft back during the McDonalds All-American game that year so I think that he still wouldve went top 10. Probably to Toronto at 4 or maybe the Clippers at 6. Both teams chose bigs (Bosh,Kaman) but it seems that Toronto is usually a little more willing to pull the trigger on foreign players than some of the other teams in the top 10. What do you guys think ?

McDunkinI actually think the Raptors might have taken him. Maybe his career would have turned out better if he had time to develop at the 4. Which was (supposed to be) his natural position.

doubledribblerParticipantIs that a serious question? Why would the Cavs have picked him? I’m not saying everything I heard and saw did not look great, but it’s really hard to pass over the hometown kid nicknamed the king. Even if Darko had turned out to be the better player, I don’t think he would have ever passed Lebron in popularity. It’s not high school, but popularity means a lot as far as money goes to an NBA team.

Mr. 19134ParticipantIt depends who what you think the order of the draft would be…Does Melo go 2nd? Even tho in hindsight everybody would probably draft Wade over Melo. Some would dare to say they would of drafted Bosh over Melo.
I think the Pistons would of had to take Melo if they didn’t get Darko. Or would they of got Bosh as their big man project that forms dynasty’s instead of Darko?
But for the sake of this argument I think the Pistons take Melo anyway because he is already great with as much potential as anybody else making it an easy choice over the potential of Bosh and already good questionable potential Wade.
At Which point at I think the Nugges take Darko with Melo gone.

mikeyvthedonParticipantWould have gone to Denver in my opinion. I do not if people remember at all, but Darko, at the time, was considered a huge basketball prospect. He was 17, a legit 7 footer and was a great athlete for his size, who had a mean streak and definite post potential. The guy is still a solid post defender and rebounder now, only lord knows what is wrong with his offensive game, but he really looked like he had potential there as well. I know the draft combine obviously is not the end all be all, but he measured with a vertical an inch less than Carmelo Anthony. I would not say taking Darko second was a no brainer, but I really do think he definitely would have gone top 5. Again, hindsight is 20/20 people. You could say, "Oh, I knew Darko would be a bust", but than, would you have somehow not thought the same thing about Pau Gasol when he was the 3rd pick in 2001? Again, different situation, but I bet the people who said, "I knew about Pau, and about Darko" are strictly saying that after Pau won rookie of the year. I truly thought Darko could be a potentially huge player, a future All-Star, because that was what he was projected as being. Everyone knew Melo was going to be a solid player, but Darko was projected to be potentially more of a game changer. Turned out to be dead wrong, but I do not know why people just all of the sudden knew about Darko from 10 miles away.
No one thought Dwyane Wade was going to be a potentially top 5 player, it was surprise enough when he was a top 5 pick. The guy had been great at Marquette, amazing actually in that game against Kentucky, but he was seen as an undersized 2 and people did not know exactly how he would project at the NBA level. I knew the guy was a winner, and I liked the pick, but again, at the time of the draft, I did not say "Should have gone to Detroit". Chris Bosh was another slight concern, as the guy was a toothpick who had a decent freshman year at Georgia Tech, but picking outside of the top 3 in this draft was seen as a major downer. That was because of LeBron, Melo and DARKO. So, I guess I am alone, but I for one think that hindsight being 20/20 (With a lot of Captain Hindsights here knowing that far more than I), if Detroit had made the SURPRISE pick and taken Melo, than Darko would have been a Nugget, and history would be changed forever. See, my whole thing is, if Detroit gets Melo, I do not know if they get Rasheed Wallace, in one of the more lopsided trades in NBA history with Atlanta. Detroit was a very good team at the time, and they were missing a piece to go along side Ben Wallace to really contend, and had they chosen Melo, who more than likely would be either starting at 3 or getting significant minutes even under significant rookie hater Larry Brown, would Atlanta make that move that pushes Detroit over the top that substantially? My thought is no, but I am sure a lot of hindsight haters probably see dynasty :).

RUDEBOY_ParticipantBlame Dirk Nowitzki’s success on why Darko was drafted so high..Nobody wanted to say that missed out on that next Euro SuperStar…
I use to live overseas and saw a few euro-league games..I thought Darko had the talent to blossom into an all star, not a superstar..But a player that could help a team..
But i was kind of surprised when scouts had it Written IN STONE THAT
Lebron should be number1..
DARKO SHOULD BE number 2..
And Melo number 3..
Sometimes the media can influence a team’s draft pick…

McDunkinI think part of what went wrong with Darko…besides beong overhyped and his spirit dying on the bench,
Was that Larry Brown wouldnt play him until he could did the things he thought a center to do. tha means he wanted Darko to put on weight and muscle and focus on d. This caused him to loose a good bit of the speed and mobility that he had coming into the league. Not to mention being a d first, back to the basket center was never meant to be his game.

Mr. 19134ParticipantDarko was going top 3 in that draft no matter what. At the very worse he don’t drop out of the top 5. Bosh was never considered a better prospect then Darko by any one on any team really. The Heat weren’t even sure if they were going to take Wade of Hinrich. A lot of people thought Hinrich would be the better player and was a pure PG and future All Star and defensive stopper. Some people thought Wade was just a scoring combo guard who played out of position and didn’t have great court vision and wouldn’t rebound at the same clip on a pro level. Bosh didn’t light the world on fire at Georgia Tech and nobody thought he was ready for the league. He was so skinny and despite being fluid didn;t have the greatest lateral movement and didn;’t really have a huge showing at the combine. Bosh was a huge risk/reward type pick. Kamen was everybodies sleeper pick who had a surprisingly good combine showing, great length, and terrific college production to go with it. Some people considered him to be the best big man available in the draft.
Coming into the draft Darko was 7’foot still growing. Has great length. Was very quick and agile and wiry strong considering his slight frame at the time. You could tell putting weight on and strength was not going to be an issue in the NBA. He was like the youngest player to ever play in a premiere league in Europe at the time and did a good job. He was playing professional basketball since he was like 14 and just pretty much defined the word prodigy in every sense of the word. Going into the draft it was easy to drink the Darko-Aid. He was easily the best European prospect to ever enter the draft. He was big, strong, athletic, could rebound, block shots, but on offense he also had great passing ability and a unique combination of a great face up game combined with mean post moves.
Darko would of benefited better by going to a team like the Raptors or Nuggets where he could of developed his game more at an early age and developed into an All Star Power Forward. He had every tool you could possibly want in a big man and was a mismatch at either 4 or 5. Too big for fours, and too athletic and quick for centers.

mikeyvthedonParticipantYou can say it is Dirk, but I think that Pau Gasol what really solidified it, as he won Rookie of the Year straight from Europe. But, the year right after that, Nikoloz Tshkititishvilli (F if I know how to spell it, I will call him Niko), was drafted in 2002 at #5 by Denver, and had a very poor rookie year. Also with Darko, I do not think it was the media’s fault he was drafted that high. I think the reason he was getting the media he did was due to the opinions of scouts. Seriously, when you have a Center, who you even said yourself, looked like an All-Star, than it is hard to pass up. Everyone thought LeBron had what it took to be an all-time great player, but Carmelo to most was not LeBron James (though for the longest time on ESPN, the two could not be separated, when one was mentioned you had to say, "well what about the other?". It was obnoxious. They are not close people, seriously, may have been than, but not now at all.). Carmelo reminded me of Big Dog (more like what Big Dog should have been, as Melo is definitely the better of the two), which to me means that an All-Star potential Center would not have been the worst pick in the world. This was also a team that had stolen the pick in a trade with the Grizzlies, and were already very strong. So, Darko being added to their already stacked core looked like a pick that was made to keep them solid until, well, beyond now. Obviously, it did not work out, as Darko did not develop like any thought he would. But, it is very hard to read into the psyche of players, and Darko had (still has) all the tools to be a better center in the league. Just seems to be a question of mentality, but he was seen as being tough as nails, but toughness does not necessarily mean progression. So, I thoroughly disagree that the Dark Man was picked that high due to media coverage. I am sure Pistons fans still would have been quite happy with Melo, maybe even more so. The guy had just won the NCAA championship and was also seen as a potential All-Star. It was seen as a 3 player draft, and Darko got props all throughout the process. The Pistons worked him out, worked out Melo, and Darko REALLY impressed them. The guy had amazing tools, was a legit 7 footer, was tough, had an advanced skill set for being 17 and he also was a great athlete for his size. You can not justify the pick now, obviously, but at the time, I do not remember to many people freaking out about Darko being 2nd pick. Maybe after his rookie year, but not before it.

Im Your FatherParticipantIt’s a tempting offer, one that I will certainly take into consideration. One thing that worries me though, is that it seems like "Based Taylor Jets Inc." just makes fun of players such as John Bryant, Paul Pierce, Matt Bonner, etc.
The thing is, Nbanflguy are completely serious in our praise of Darko. I worry that if we join your little club it will imply that we are making fun of the best center in the league, and I really don’t want that.
It is sorely tempting though and will require some serious reflection. I will get back to you.

mxhart532ParticipantIf Darko was born 15 years earlier, he would have saved the U.S.S.R. with his all around talent and MJ would be ringless.

Im Your FatherParticipantUmm McSerbian I don’t have any idea what you are talking about. No one is insulting Darko, we are the "Darko Fan Club." The phrase "Fan Club," has a positive connotation. You will notice that we only say positive things about Darko. This is for two reasons.
1. We are huge fans.
2. He is possibly the greatest player of all time, and there aren’t really any negative things to say.

Im Your FatherParticipantIn regards to the Darko fan club, with respect to our founding member Nbafanflguy, I would like to make this proclamation:
We are absolutely thrilled to see that so many people are so enthusiastic about Darko Milicic and we are equally as thrilled to see our skyrocketing membership. However, we must insist that you take Darko seriously, and do not attempt to make him a subject of satirical ridicule like what has happened to John Bryant. If you in any way treat Darko with anything less than the utmost respect you will be immediately dismissed from the club. Not only will you feel the wrath of the remaining members, but you will also suffer at the hands of Darko himself, for he is not to be taken lightly.
This is merely a suggestion and doesn’t become final until Nbafanflguy signs off on it, but I think it would be in the best interest of our club to make our intentions clear.

Or you’ll end up like this certain deceased, faceless, man whos Darkos wrath was unleashed on.
Darko has mercy, but only if you give him a donut.
