Exum was drafted just a few years ago at #5 and was even getting Kobe comparisons. He was injured in his first years and I kept hearing "wait ’till he comes back’. Well since then the Jazz have become a very respectable young team, one the verge of being one of the best, but he rarely plays. Honestly, I Utah is one of those teams that I just never watch, I dont really know much about. So guys, help me- what’s up with Dante? Is he not in shape because of injuries or was he just a big flop, or is he still a big potential player and it’ll take him a bit longer?

I always thought he was overhyped. He never played against real competition, didn’t even want to workout against people in the pre-draft.

Well, he missed a whole year due to an ACL tear, which obviously set back his development. Then, when he came back this season, he was rusty and had trouble staying in the rotation to the increased depth on the roster.

I’m not really sure if anyone knows what to make of exum at this point. The potential is obviously still there, but at some point he has to start showing noticeable improvement on the court. Does he handle the ball well enough or see the floor well enough to be a one? Does he shoot it well enough to be a two? Does he even really fit with Utah’s slow-paced offensive style and will he ever gain Snyder’s trust enough to find out? Hopefully, these are questions that will start to be answered next season. If not, than a change of scenery may be mutually beneficial for both sides.

Give him a full year in the D League to see if he will amount to anything…

Coach Snyder while leading them to the playoffs he’s clearly stunting this kids growth and the organization will make a huge mistake by paying Hill 20+ million a year this offseason. Develop your young talent and let them get a taste of the playoffs. You got Exum and Lyles sitting on the bench when they could speed up the tempo with the 2nd unit and get easy points. You have people calling these young guys busts when they’re not given an opportunity to play to their strengths and given time to make mistakes in meaningful minutes.

Imagine if the Thunder listened all the dummies that bashed Westbrook and traded him for pennies because he was young and reckless and there are plenty of examples of this. These young guys get drafted for what they’re good at and what they can become and then these coaches don’t let them play to their strengths and we as fans bash them for not being good at stuff they’ve never been good at or asked to do.

almost 30 points per 100 poss.  almost 20 per 36 minutes and at one point this season was averaging 20 points a game. he is career high in points` per game and FG% this year by far the best PG on the team and Mack is the second. and I think he was top 13 in PGs this year

He has played decent minutes across his two years but hasn’t developed as much as I’d like him to. He is still young only 21 and next season will be a big one for him. I’d assume Utah pick up his 4th year rookie option in the autumn.

His scoring did improve by 1.4ppg last year on over 130 less shots and that was despite avering under 0.300 from 3 point range, so if he gets extra minutes and gets his 3 point range working then he can be an offensive threat.

I just wonder whether a change of scenery might be needed for him, Utah would not get equal value back for him but could get a decent first rounder.

He was doomed from the start and most of it came from having a great game in the world championships.   Always thought he was overrated and didn’t see this first step that was talked about.  Nor did I see him getting in the lane at will or even scoring like that.   He scammed the NBA and the guy who pushed him as the next MJ has lost all credibility.

Still think Exum made a dumb decision not to play college basketball. In hindsight, he sort of "wasted" a year before the draft, got injured in the NBA, and has had a tough time breaking into the Jazz rotation since. Bad luck aside, that’s 3 years of development that got stunted.

Otherwise, on a pure prospect level, he was basically a Giannis type of talent physically. A potential combo with great size and length, incredibly athletic with a work-in-progress skill set.

i think he is a long term project. with missing a year from before the draft and then the year being injured it set him back a lot i think. i think mentally it will take some time to fully come back fully too. they will work on devloping him but it may be more in practice i think. he will earn his floor time. one of the reasons they added george hill was because they thought he could be a good mentor for him

If Utah wasn’t a genuine playoff team, I think he’d be getting more chances. Snyder has to balance letting Exum play through mistakes and getting the team up for the playoffs. Exum’s minutes have been sporadic through the regular season, sometimes going a long stretch without playing, then he’ll be in the starting lineup. His head must be spinning, not knowing whether he’ll get regular minutes. It can’t be conducive to consistent performances. I hope next pre season Exum earns the backup PG spot from Mack and Neto and gets regular, consistent minutes as Hill’s backup.

His playing time has been reasonable – 18 to 20 minutes as a back up guard who is still a work in progress. He got 12 minutes in a crucial play off match too, so it’s not like his coach has put him out of rotation when he could have stuck with his experienced guys.

Quin Snyder is a very experienced guy who had a long time as an assistant before getting the Utah job, so he knows how to develop a player I’d think. Dante has good team mates like Joe Johnson to learn from too. Plus Jerry Sloan is still around the franchise so Dante isn’t short of potential advice if he can get minutes on court.

Utah isn’t a bad place for him to be but if he doesn’t progress than maybe a change of scenery could be required.

But wherever he goes, he’s likely to have to serve a PG apprenticeship as a back up for a few more years.

His minutes have been ok, but he might play 20 minutes 5 games in a row, then not play for the next three. I’m not bagging Snyder, he’s doing a great job. Exum hasn’t won the backup PG spot and that’s on him. It’d make it easier if he earned the minutes he needs to develop.

Does Utah think it can contend for a championship with Gobert and Hayward as its best players? If so, they should continue to develop Exum into a potential major piece in two or three years when the team is making a run to the finals.

If not, Exum — along with some combination of Favors, Hood and Lyles — are the chips Utah will probably need to bring in a franchise player. Everyone knows the Jazz don’t attract the big-name free agents.

I dont see the potential. All he really projects to do well is penetrate defences and play defence on both gaurd positions. His handles are loose and he doesnt have a scorers mentality. Hes still young and most importantly he hasnt had much in game experience so if you were excited about him before his lack of playing time on a very good team should not change that. But what do people think he is going to develop into? Russell Westbrook? I just dont see it. Seems like a high energy change of pace combo gaurd.

It will be interesting to see if Utah look to table him an offer this summer, they might look to get him tied up on the cheap because if he has a break out year next season his value could rocket.

I was always in two minds about him as a prospect as there was a gap after the big 3 in his draft year. But a lot of people myself included had him in our top 5’s and a number of people had pegged him to go 4th and considered him the best prospect after Wiggins, Parker and Embeast.

The top of 2014 draft has ceertainly been injury prone – Embiid only 30 odd games, Parker two major injuries and Dante missing his entire 2nd year.

There used to be a slight part in me that was hopeful in a duo of Trey Burke and Dante Exum.
