I think he should go a lot higher than he is projected. A 7ft player with a great body, build and athleticism. I feel you just have to risk it with these rare guys. I had Deandre Jordan going a lot higher in his draft and was shocked he went so late. Also I thought Whiteside should have gone higher, and kept tabs on him even asking about him on this site before he got with the Heats.

Jones doesn’t have the explosive athleticism of a Deandre Jordan or Andre Drummond. He is a great fluid athlete for his size though but also is not the most physical prospect. Although the same could be said for Drummond’s freshman campaign and throughout his NBA career he has been a physical presence in the paint.

I was just tossing those two out for examples. However, athletically he is similar or could even be a little more athletic than Whiteside. He has potential on the offensive end with a soft touch and jump shot, but isn’t consistent with anything. Which isn’t surprising for athletic 7fters. I don’t think he’ll be the shot blocker you would expect with his athletic gif because for a 7fter he looks to have short arms. I could be wrong though on his wingspan.

Watch his game against Wichita State. He’s hard to find.

The thing about athletic 7 footers, not all of them are dominant and not all of them have this unbelievable untapped potential. Jones was fine in college, he was maybe even better than fine, but I sure as heck wouldn’t want him starting at the 5 spot on my team in the NBA.

Looks like he could be a guy who gives a team 12-15 minutes off the bench, set some picks, run fast, but I don’t see anything special with him.

TBH he looked more promising last year even though he came back and measured out taller.  His skills didn’t improve as much from last year to this.  He’s got some rudimentary post moves like baby hooks and dropsteps but nothing too elaborate.  He’s got decent form on his shot, but the results aren’t there.  Looks like he shoots for form, not the release bc his shot looks the same but the ball comes out of his hand differently. He was a late bloomer, so his game still being raw is expected, but my biggest problem with him is that his awareness is not good and his reactions are slow. He’s not quick to rotate and he’s slow to the ball.  He also doesn’t have the greatest of hands.

He’s a good athlete though. Runs the floor well and he’s a powerful, quick leaper, but he’s not a Jordan type physical specimen. He doesn’t play as physically and his length isn’t nearly as freaky as Jordan’s.  For a C, his length is pretty average to slightly below average. Honestly, I thought he was more intriguing of a prospect as a PF. He’s a bit taller but he reminds me of a Chris Wilcox type. Looks more like a back up PF/C.

Pretty good analysis. Watched him a lot this year and your points are very accurate. Expanding on your point about slow reaction times. He picks up way too many stupid fouls and doesn’t seem to learn from it game to game. The game he played at the end of the season @Texas A&M is a perfect example of what I am talking about

Man, he’s kind of a wimp. I know that isn’t the most high level analysis of him, but every time I watched him this season, I saw him shy away from contact, get out muscled by smaller players, and make poor decisions on the block.

One rarely can 100% count out the type of physical gifts he has, but with his natural ability and 3 years of collegiate experience 6.9 rebounds per game is really underwhelming. I feel like he has the mindset of a face up / perimeter player, but the skills and body of a post man.

Might be a guy who can eek out a living as a backup, but honestly, I think he’s a 2nd rounder.

Not every late bloomer is a Whiteside, plus it should be noted, Whiteside blocked 182 shots in 1 season at Marshall…Jones blocked 163 during 3 years at Vandy.
