As a Dallas fan, when I heard the news that DeAndre was going back to the Clippers from a friend whose a Clippers fan, I had mixed emotions. On the one hand, I was pretty shattered after thinking that we’d have such a young and exciting piece on our team for the next few seasons. But the other part of me thinks that this may be a blessing in disguise for our franchise.

Now, let me say now, I don’t think DeAndre is a bad player- quite to the contary, I think he is one of the best centers in the game today. However, I don’t think that he would of put us over the top in the West. Over the years Mark Cuban has admirably tried to lure that big fish free agent- Deron Williams, Dwight Howard, DeAndre. But we have never been able to land that guy who we could put next to Dirk as both a way to get Dirk a winning season to end his career on, and to take the reigns of the franchise going into the post-Dirk era. Now, with DeAndre spurning us, we are left at a cross roads. We have just lost Monta, Brandon Wright, Jae Crowder, our first round pick for this year and Tyson Chandler for 4 months of a disenchated Rajon Rondo- not exactly a great deal from our perspective. But I think this major loss will serve to push us in a direction we needed to go.

2011 was a perfect storm for the Mavs. We had peak Dirk, and he balled out of his mind all year. We had the perfect construction of guys around him, all veterans hungry for an illusive Larry O’Brien trophy, but not bums who couldn’t play anymore. Guys like Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Tyson Chandler. We coalesced at the perfect time and managed to catch the Heat in the first year of assemblement, and I think that was a big break for us, being able to play them in their first year together was key in us being able to beat them. But we just can’t repeat that same formula anymore. We can’t build around Dirk like we used to, we can’t ask him to play 35+ minutes and give us 25+ points a night, he just isn’t the spring chicken he once was. The last few years we’ve been stuck in the not quite good enough to make playoff noise, but not bad enough to get a lotto pick, and that is the absolute worst kind of limbo to be in as an NBA fan.

Missing on DJ, losing Monta and Tyson for nothing, I truely hope that this is the final signal for Mark Cuban, by all accounts one of the best owners in pro-sports, to give up on chasing that last hurrah for Dirk. We simply can’t bounce into contending shape within Dirk’s limited remaining time with us. We need to start looking at our options for building through the draft, and with how bad we’ve done at drafting the late first round over the past decade, we are going to need a high enough pick that its a no brainer choice. The Mavs haven’t taken a guy in the lotto and had him play for the team that season since Samaki Walker in 1996. This year that needs to change. With our pick going to Boston if we don’t get in the top 7, we need to have all hands on deck on this tank trip. I love Rick Carlislse and truely believe he is one of the best coaches in the league, but I pray that he can just pump out the losses this year in the knowledge that he will have a better roster(hopefully) the season following. It may not be a one year turn around as many teams that have tried quick rebuilds have found over the past few years(the Lakers, Celtics come to mind), but it is a much more appealing option to me as a fan then chasing non needle moving free agents and handing out the huge contracts we’ve given to guys like Wes Matthews. We need impact players, and we just haven’t been able to get them through free agency.

Basically the whole point of this post is to just highlight, that as a Mavs fan I’m more excited about our future without DeAndre than I was about the future with him. Yes I was very excited to see him running the floor, running picks with Parsons and Dirk feasting on wide open jumpers off DeAndre diving to the rim, but without him Dallas must turn in a direction we haven’t gone since the days of the franchise being a laughing stock in the 90’s- building through the draft. I am also very glad that DeAndre went back to the Clippers, because as a basketball fan in general I love watching the connection that he, Blake and Chris Paul share, and shall continue to enjoy watching them play together for years to come.

It sucks to see a player like Dirk having absolutely no one to play with, but as long as Carlisle is around I think you have probably the 2nd best coach currently in the league. Hopefully your team can figure out a new game plan going forward. At some point they are going to have to hit on their draft picks. They have had a horrible record of draft picks. Beubouis had potential, but the injury derailed him. Crowder was an OK pick, but they traded him for Rondo. I’m not sure if you have seen a difference, but I think once Cuban got his championship he wasn’t as driven to get another one. He obviously still wants to win, but he’s far from the guy that was taking on any and every contract to attempt to win a championship.

Your point about DeAndre is pretty much on spot. As good as he is and will be, he wasn’t going to make the Mavs a championship team. They just have too many holes on their roster. In the end he would have been another reason for the Mavs to keep patching up holes to keep competing. It’s time to blow the thing up and start over.

Cuban himself admitted that we might tank .it will happen and every team knows he has to do it one time unless you are the Spurs
And look ,I’ve been following this site for 7 years and been posting here for 5 or more .through this years I’ve always hoped the Mavs will once think better about the draft ,may be try to make a trade in the top .or may be try to build through the draft later .I am all for rebuild through the draft
That said it isn’t a question of would we do it ,it is a question of when to do it
I won’t do it this season.and most people think we won’t
1st You said and I quote
” I love Rick Carlisle and truely believe he is one of the best coaches in the league, but I pray that he can just pump out the losses this year in the knowledge that he will have a better roster(hopefully) the season following.”

But you forget that this is his last year .his contract ends in 2016 .basketball wise he has no reason to renew. many teams would love to have him .already rumored that he is Lebron favorite coach so if Blatt doesn’t win next year RC will move to them most probably .and in general unless he has offcourt reason to stay here .he is gone
So he has no reason to think ahead ,he has no reason to tarnish his record with tanking .RC right now is one of the best coaches in the league and he will try to win and will never try to lose

2nd .we Have Dirk Nowitzki .the greatest Mavs ever who made this franchise what it is .the guy took 20M pay cut in 2010.he took over 40M pay cut last year .to help the team winning .
He isn’t here to tank .he is here to win as much games in his last 2 seasons and join the 30K club .we own him that .
If he wants the Mavs to compete then we compete .period .we can’t tell him we would intentionally lose . at least not for couple of years

3rd .we have traded the pick .with 5 years top 7 protected .5 years look a lot but it isn’t .see the Wolves & Kings man
When we decide to tank,we need to realize it will be a long process and do it without fear of losing the pick
I would start it after giving it to Celtics not b4

4th .We have Wes/Parsons/Dirk starting at 2-3-4 position .they are all very good starters who perfectly fit in RC system
We just good a good rotation C in Zaza . And we already have our franchise guy in Rick Carlisle .
We got 41 wins with Collison ,OJ Mayo, old Marion and Kaman in the starting line up .we have much better chance in assembling a better roster

We won’t tank this,at least not intentionally .that is fact that most fans realize it right now with Cuban here
We ill probably get a roster and try to compete for play-off spot .I think the best we can would probably get 7th place but more likely finish in the lottery around 9th-11th .gie Celtics the a pick in the region 12-14th
But I would take that over forcing a losing mentality over the best player and coach in our history in a year that might be their last with the franchise .I would do it over risking giving them top 3 pick in 2021 (remember our track of draft)

       Uhhhhhhh the Spurs did tank,.

It’s called pre-1997 draft. Without the most epic tankapalooza ever Pop is probably on his 3rd NBA coaching gig and the spurs are in like Las Vegas.

Mark Cuban WOULD BE the guy to tell his team to full on tank to an 0-82 season.

I feel like giving Wes the max after DJ spurned Dallas was not only a good PR stunt but also an indication of a tank season in the works. They could have concievably convinced Wes that the money he left on the table in order to sign DJ could still be used to bring in a good FA.

The Dallas stars are open minded and paid well enough to take a hit on their egos this season in order to have a better year the following.

Missing out on DeAndre is a big blow to Dallas especially as they let other big men slip through the net on the assumption he was coming. But the idea of tanking does seem a bit far fetched, they have signed Wes Matthews to a big deal, invested in Parsons last year and Dirk is still a skilled big man. It would need thyem to sit these 3 guys a lot to be one of the worse teams next season.

I don’t see them blowing nearly $40 million in salary to do this especially in the last few years of Dirk’s career. Also if the Mavs did try to tank then Dirk could easily retire next year if he thought they weren’t relevant or even the possibility he could get offers from other teams next summer to go to a legit contender.

Dirk with his game, could easily play up until he is 40 and the chance to join the 30K point club might be on the horizon in the next season or two.

Zara gives them a serviceable big man and now adding D-Will gives them a bargain PG which should see Dallas through to the end of the Dirk era. They can also add a decent bench veteran or two if needed.

They still shamelessly tanked to get Duncan and would likely be nothing on the court and the Las Vegas Spurs or some other variant name.
