KingPapasParticipantI know Stephen Curry is not praised for his Defense. He is often able to coast on defense because Andre Igudala and Klay Thompson usually guards the other teams best perimeter players.
After watching last nights game. I think he complete locked up Chris Paul. He ripped him clean on 1 or two times, it is rare that is see CP3 get his pocket picked. Bottom line, not having to play Defense because you have the luxury of playing with two great defenders and not being able to play defense is two different things. Which one do you think Curry falls under?

MettaWorldDurant1ParticipantIf you compare advanced stats for Curry and Westbrook they’re surprisingly close..IMO it’s about what people assume based on the players demeanor.

ChicagoCaseyParticipantDisagree….. I believe he is an overrated defender given his stats say otherwise. Chris Paul is bound to have bad games given how much of a load he have to carry. I believe Chris Paul was just fatigued for how much he had to do for the Clippers since Blake Griffin got injured. And ripping up players 1 or 2 times doesn’t really suggest "locking up" because that’s only 2 possessions in a over 50 possession game.
I say his team around him help him a lot that they can hide him on most plays. They do have Andrew Bogut, Klay Thompson, Iggy, Harrison Barnes, Draymond Green, and Festus Ezeli are all plus defenders. I’m not saying he don’t give effort or anything on defense, but that doesn’t mean he is a plus defender. What the Warriors have is 2 defensive player of the year candidates, 3/4 players that are worthy of all defensive teams, and two outstanding shot blockers/rim protectors. Having great rim protectors help a lot by the perimeter defenders be way more aggresive than players without great rim protectors at the rim. By having great rim protection the opposing team takes more inefficient shots that can be contested.

D7H7NParticipantCurry’s allowed to gamble a lot of defense only because the other 4 starters on the court play amazing defense.

KingPapasParticipantI agree, but that doesn’t mean he is a bad defender or even average. Goes to my point of being in a situation where he is allowed to gamble. Same can be said for most shot blockers, they don’t play great position defense they actually get out of position to record most of their blocks, which is a gamble.

Stop_basketball_nonsenseParticipantActually I think most sensible people agree with your overall general point that there is a difference between giving effort, & not giving effort. One you can show lack of care the other you may just have bad fundamentals so you get burnt from bad positioning, stance, and communication.
Now the thing about gambling, I will say is a.more specific version of your overall point, which I feel works against defending curry. Yes there are bugs who are not great position defenders but are allowed to gamble some may call them fodd defenders but more advanced minds can tell the difference. Look at Whiteside, he brings a lot defensively to the table, but bad positioning overall costs him the starting spot, doesn’t mean the heat don’t need him. In the case of guards it looks worst when they gamble because they have a lot more room to play out of and cover, if ypy gamble on the perimeter you open up more space for the offense creating 4-3s and so forth versus a big who if he gambles has less space to make up.
I watch curry jump in the air before the guy he is guarding even makes a dribble or pass all the time. His stance is lazy sloyching at an angle(bad positioning), and he gambles. To make such a pont after 1 game vs a team where 1 guy orchestrates everything on offense at the moment is in.my opinion illogical. If baffles me that many will stand behind curry being a sub average-average defender but still call him the best pg/best player in the game. I know the pg position is changing and I’m understanding of that but isn’t the pg still supposed to be the 1st like be of defense?

CynthiaParticipantI once thought nothing could ever be worse than Lebron bandwagoners, then Curry happened. His fanbase is absolutely sickening. Yeah the guys good at shooting but that’s about where it stops.
He has flaws just like any other player. He’s a sub par defender, don’t give me that bullsh1t. His defensive stats are decent because his teammates are incredible defenders, some of the best at their respective positions. His handles are above average but he’s no Jason Williams or Rafer Alston. His passing ability is standard among NBA point guards, he shows some flash occasionally but who doesn’t.
It’s frustrating because as a fan of the game I love Curry, and he’s doing some crazy stuff I’ve never seen before. But his fanbase is really annoying, to the point I don’t even watch the Warriors anymore or their highlights. Bandwagoners really dampen the game for me and that’s unfair to the player, I doubt he wants a bunch of 12 year old fanboys & trolls on his junk.
