sniperParticipantSo you have to choose one from each category, right?
OK, the way I do this is I start by looking for steals. Mailman, Charles, Dream and Ewing are all huge steals at $1 or $2. I’m going to go Malone and Ewing. Cool, I just used 20% of my money to build 40% of my team, and so far my team is awesome.
Now I’m going to take two all time-greats in Pippen and Miller. So I’ve got Malone and Ewing down low, Pippen and Miller on the wings, and $4 to spend on a point guard. Penny is the $4 PG — Kidd had the better career, but I think Penny was probably better in his prime. We’re talking about all these players in their prime, right? OK.
P. Hardaway-Miller-Pippen-Malone-Ewing.
But wait. I’m a diehard Spurs fan. I want to get the Admiral on my team. (And I do think peak Admiral was a significant upgrade over peak Ewing). To swap Ewing for Admiral I need to shave $3 off the rest of my team. I could go with Kidd over Penny, which like I said is a tossup anyway. Maybe take Payton over Pippen (similar players other than their size) and move Miller to the small forward? Still a buck short. And losing Pippen hurts.
Another option is to drop to Kevin Johnson at the point. He was really, really good — if he didn’t get injured so much he might have been as good as any of these guys. That would give me a lineup of KJ-Miller-Pippen-Malone-Robinson. I like it!
I’ve got an all-time defender on the perimeter (Pippen) and at the rim (Admiral). I’ve got one of the all-time great clutch shooters (Reggie). I’ve got an all-star point guard who can get to the rim at will. And I’ve got an all-time great go-to scorer and all around player in Mailman.
I know, I don’t have MJ or Kobe. But I like my team. Kevin Johnson/Reggie Miller/Scottie Pippen/Karl Malone/David Robinson.

armchairgmParticipantSniper it is not building a team it is combining those players attributes to make a Frankenstein type player.
