d-grizzlyParticipantHey everybody, it’s good to be back. College has been time consuming but here I am!
I thought I’d give us something to dicuss here. This will be debated until the end of time.
who would you choose between paul or d-will?
0 - Posted on: Mon, 10/19/2009 - 8:44am #222667

d-grizzlyParticipanti’m going with paul. In my opinion, I think he’s the best pg in the league with few trailing him closely.

AirJuggernautsize and stremgth ability to abuse smaller PGs I’d go with D-will
If I needed a distributor to weave in betweeen defenders and draw attention CP3
CP3 makes his teammates better WHY?
because he gets in the lanes so easily and takes attention away from other guys making them openDeron Williams they say is held back by Jery Sloan’s system but the truth is he calls his own plays sometimes
even John stockton never did tat with SloanD-Will can take pressure off other players but he’s more of a SG-his size helps bully smaller guards and create his own shot but he can’t get in the lane like CP3 bcuz he’s built to slash
(one announcer even called him “the Lebron of point guards”)0 - Posted on: Mon, 10/19/2009 - 10:24am #222682

Im Your FatherParticipantI don’t understand how you can say that he is more a SG. He is 6’3, which is fairly tall for a PG, but not unheard of, and he is as true a point guard as anyone. As a matter of fact, I would say that he runs the pick and roll better than any other player in the NBA. It’s not as if he is some kind of combo guard.

AirJuggernautwanted to put him at the SG last yr
bcuz he’s there best scorer
that’s why
PS
a scoring pg with sg size is the definition of a combo guard0

Lemons4LifeParticipantWay more well rounded in my opinion. However, I think paul puts up the better stats to make him the better one, but I like Williams way more and I think he’s clutch in big games. Also, 6’3 isn’t bad at all for a PG. In fact Gilbert Arenas, Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose, and even Magic Johnson are pretty tall. So in the end I think Paul is the better player, but I like Williams more.

AirJuggernautI’d want CP3 and Kobe backcourt
than a Deron Williams and Kobe backcourt

Im Your FatherParticipantI’m sorry but I think that’s a horrible definition for a combo guard. 1st of all please show me where Sloan said that he wanted Williams at the 2. Williams is a pure point guard, who is best served for both himself and his team, with the ball in his hands. Williams has every attribute you look for in a pg, he runs his team remarkably well and has great court vision, frequently making spectacular passes.
A combo guard is a guard who is pg sized, but plays like a SG and don’t have the vision or ability to run a team required to play the 1 full time. Players such as Ben Gordon, Eric Gordon, Jason Terry, are combo guards. Just because a point guard can score, which CP3 does more than Deron Williams I might add, doesn’t mean that they are a combo guard. I cannot see any situation where it would be beneficial for the Jazz, to take the ball out of his hands. He runs their offense better than anyone.

AirJuggernauta combo guard is a combo guard because they don’t have court vision?
see Devin Harris 6apg
see Brandon Roy 5apga combo guard can play a COMBINATION of both guard spots
if u don’t have court vision or passing ability how can u call that guy a PG
ben gordon avg 1 assists per game vs Boston he is a UNDERSIZED SG
I think that ur confusing COMBINATION guard with Undersized shooters

JNixonParticipantI’d take Chris Paul. I agree that Deron Williams runs the pick-n-roll the best in the NBA, but Chris Paul is better at everything else to me except he’s not as big and not quite the jump shooter.

AirJuggernaut1st of all please show me where Sloan said that he wanted Williams at the 2.
Deron Williams Hates Playing Shooting Guard
By Dime MagazineAfter Deron Williams proved to be one of the most versatile members of Team USA this summer, killing the comp at the point and at the shooting guard slot when Chris Paul was in the game, he’s made his feelings about playing the position perfectly clear.
“I hate playing the two,” said Deron. “I don’t like playing the two. I’m a one. I like to have the ball in my hands.”
Not that the Jazz need to spend their time worrying about anything else – the worth of Kirilenko and possible relocation of Boozer is troublesome enough. But add in that Deron and Jerry Sloan might not be on the same page about their star’s role? Sloan said that “there might be times we do that,” referring to sliding D-Will to the two with a smaller lineup of Brevin Knight or C.J. Price at the point.
“It’s not a guarantee or anything,” he added. “It’s (just) that some of the teams you play against probably will be able to play smaller, and Deron can play there because he’s done it in the past. It’s not a big deal for him.”

Im Your FatherParticipantWell obviously he was going to have to play there some for Team USA, because he, along with paul was one of the best players on the team, and Paul is not large enough to guard 2s. It doesn’t seem as though Sloan was suggesting playing Williams at the 2 on a regular basis, it would be a terrible idea if he was.
Secondly, I still don’t see how that makes him a combo guard. To me a combo guard is a Devin Harris, or a Ben Gordon, Iverson or Crawford, someone without the instincts to handle the ball full-time. I just don’t see Deron Williams fitting that mold at all, he was the primary ball handler at Illinois, even when playing with the much smaller Dee Brown. In my mind, the only thing that makes DWILL more of combo guard than Chris Paul or any other “true-point” is his superior size. I would argue that he runs a team better than anyone in the league with the possible exception of Chris Paul.

AirJuggernautcan he play both positions? yes or no?
in basketball the more positions u can play the better
people use the term combo guard like its a bad thing… Personally I think “tweener” is worse
a tweener means ur stuck between positions
true point= ur unselfish and can create 4 othersD-Will is not a tweener
he can play both positions AND is a true PGagree or disagree?
0 - Posted on: Mon, 10/19/2009 - 12:21pm #222711

Im Your FatherParticipantI guess I agree that he is capable of playing the 2. I guess my point is, it is not as though he does, or should, play those positions an equal amount. If you had to assign him a single position it would definitely be point guard. I would liken him to Kobe. Yes Kobe is capable of playing small forward, but it is not his most effective position. You wouldn’t consider Kobe a swingman would you. The same goes for Deron Williams.

AirJuggernautI think D-Will is best at the PG as well
0 - Posted on: Mon, 10/19/2009 - 12:26pm #222715

JNixonParticipantHe actually was a 2-guard in college for the most part, with Dee Brown running the point and Luther Head playing off-guard. He has played off the ball, but he’s a PG that has the ability to play the 2 for spot minutes and still be effective. Not as effective as he is playing PG but effective nontheless…
0- Posted on: Mon, 10/19/2009 - 12:33pm #222718
AirJuggernautHe sounded kind of like KG at Center
he knows he’s a better mismatch at PG and don’t wanna give up anything (size) on defense0
- Posted on: Mon, 10/19/2009 - 12:33pm #222719

llperezi’d take paul. Williams is a better shooter and scorer. But with paul, you know he is gonna run the team the right way every single night. If williams is off on his shot, it can effect his impact on the game. But paul just runs the whole show no matter if his own offense is not on. It’s close, but there is just somethig about Paul that gives you a confidence that there is not a better pg in the game to run your team.
0 - Posted on: Mon, 10/19/2009 - 12:44pm #222725

JNixonParticipantI don’t even think Williams is the better scorer LL in all honesty, Chris Paul could be the best scoring PG in the league if he wasn’t so unselfish. He is the only player that scores as much as he does, and still racks up that amount of assists. That shows me he’s special, and he gets all of his offense in the flow of the game.

tonyl33ParticipantI’ll take CP3 on my team since he makes average Joe’s look like superstars. CP3 has that abilitily like JKid to make average players look like allstars. Dwill has a better stroke and can knock down last minute shots. All in all, their both evenly as good. It’s like saying, do you want James or Melo? Can’t go wrong with either one. I’ll rather have melo take my last shot but I’ll want to build my team around James.

butidonthavemoneyI think the stats are misleading. I don’t think it’s fair to judge either one on stats. Deron Williams had that ankle injury that blew his stats to hell for the first half of the season (also the reason that he didn’t make the all-star team).
0 - Posted on: Mon, 10/19/2009 - 3:16pm #222767
Champzilla21ParticipantI personally like Williams better compared to paul, you said that williams gets to call his own play well thats true but how often does this team get out on the break, they dont have that many finisher compared to paul too. I also think Williams has better handles then paul, he is also better at taking it to the rim due to his size and is better able to absor contact. He also is a better shooter and the best pick and roll player in the leage as of now doesnt matter who it is. I would say nash but stoudamire has made him look really good
