r377ParticipantESPN reported in early January that the Kings already have begun planning to offer Cousins one of the league’s new maximum Designated Player contract extensions — estimated to be in the $219 million range over five seasons — once the league’s new collective bargaining agreement takes effect in July. Asked on Monday about those intentions by ESPN, Divac said: “We are going in that direction.”
That is about $44mill per season…. WOW !!!

BleedGreen808ParticipantAfter learning he won’t be traded and will be offered the Designated Player Extension he gets his 15th and 16th tech. First one for pushing a Bulls assistant coach. Then with seconds left in the game he gets the second because he didn’t get a foul call. Now he’ll be suspended for the game against Boston on Wednesday.

Magic JordanParticipant44 mil per season for a grown man baby. Wow. What a time to be an NBA player.
The saddest part about this is he would punch me in the face for calling him a grown man baby.
He is basically going to give away any chance at ever being in the playoffs as anything other than the 8 seed. But for that much money I don’t blame him one bit.
Just hope he doesn’t end up murdering somebody.

theballerwayParticipantThey will put enough incentives in the contract to keep him somewhat in line. Its such a scary investment because he is actually good enough to be in that type of conversation. Its just a shame about his mental make up.
I think its also a safe bet that if they dont pay him some other team will, theyre kinda stuck unless they reconsider trading him.(which I would reluctantly do)

HitsterParticipantIt will be interesting to see how these type of deals go down with KD, Steph Curry MVP as FA’s this summer. Westbrook also immediately springs to mind.
If they could incentivise the contract to keep him on the straight and narrow then it would be a good move.
As regards the joke about his technical, I wonder if Kings have ever thought about hiring Sheed Wallace to see if he could really give DMC that killer instinct and maybe get inside his head in a positive way.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantThis just seems like a disaster waiting to happen. The kings are an organization with no direction and cousins is a player badly in need of direction right now. Sure, he is incredibly talented and will put up great numbers, but he creates a toxic environment around the team and his behavior has largely gone unchecked.
I really think a fresh start would benefit both cousins and the Kings, regardless of whether he is saying he wants to be traded or not. Their roster isn’t good enough to win now and I don’t think free agents will line up to go there whether cousins is there or not. They really need to rebuild, but that will not happen with cousins on the roster. And I really don’t think cousins is ever more than a good stats- bad team guy in Sacramento and eventually he will probably grow frustrated with that as he gets further into his career. For him to fully realize his potential, I think he needs to play elsewhere.
Props to cousins for getting paid if this goes down, but I don’t see it ending well.

LovebugParticipantYou don’t know if the Kings were offered a good deal for him to begin with

HitsterParticipantSome team is going to end up with a player on a cap crippling contract but the Designated Player option will be great news for the likes of DMC, Harden, Westbrook, Steph Curry etc. Further ahead guys like say Jimmy Butler and Kemba Walker could benefit.
There was an article whereby a player lets say Westbrook would have to leave $57 million on the table if they moved as a FA.
At GSW Steph Curry can be a designated player and get something like $200 million over 5 years, whilst KD cannot be so would have to "make do" with about $36 million a year.

no skillsParticipantso will the league also issue bigger fines? with that kind of money getting fined would hurt less if its the typical fine. good for cousins and good for the community as cousins does do a lot to help the needy.
