 Just based on draft need alone Poeltl could end up as the 3rd pick. Not many centers near the top of the draft in 2016.

At this point, it looks like a total crapshoot after Ingram and Simmons go 1-2.

Poeltl plays center, which means high positional value. He’s also ready to contribute in the NBA from Day 1. 

His moves are so smooth, and his rate of development so high, that it would surprise nobody if he shot the lights out from NBA 3 at the Combine and other pre-draft workouts.

Poeltl isn’t extremely good at anything, but he’s VERY good at everything. Like a skinnier Marc Gasol with less passing ability but a lot more mobility.

Pau Gasol, maybe that’s the name I’m looking for, who knows?

at 7’1" Poeltl will be a steady scorer, defender, rebounder, and rim protector from day one.

 

 

Just don’t be surprised if Poeltl shows up to the Combine at a ripped 260 lbs and shooting lights out in shooting drills and team workouts. Promoted by a couple highly impressive youtube videos.

Poeltl is almost the ideal modern center, with the ideal being the taller and longer Porzingis.

He hasn’t even taken a college three yet and there is nothing about his shooting to suggest he will ever be a perimeter shooter but you think in a few moths hes going to shoot lights out from nba three?  No I don’t think so.  Or at least I don’t think he should be taken that high.. and I like him as a prospect.  Tbh he looks like an energy big.  Now that can still be a very valuable player, but would a team really want to take an energy player top 3?  Skillwise he’s still raw and awkward, albeit with a solid feel for the game.  He knows how to move, cut, set picks and make himself available but I don’t ever see him being a legit 1 on 1 threat.  He rushes moves, his footwork can be awkward,  He’ll throw the occasional upfake, but I don’t see the counters, patience or intuitiveness that I see from young players who eventually become good low post scorers. I think he’s overrated.

He’s a low mistake 7 footer, with nice hands, and footwork, but I don’t see him as someone who’s going to really excel at the next level. Length paired with athleticism has given him trouble going back to last season.

Take for instance Utah’s 2 losses against Oregon….Going against Chris Boucher, he averaged 10 points and 7.5 rebounds while blocking no shots, and you look at his performance against Colorado’s Josh Scott (6’10” / 7’2” wingspan with strength and mobility) where he was held to just 6 points and 11 rebounds on 2-8 shooting.

His production is impressive, and I think he has a future in the league, but his big games come against small teams. Washington doesn’t start a guy over 6’9”, Temple runs a 3 guard lineup with two 6’8” guys down low, he put up nice numbers against Plumlee, but Duke has no depth.

I think his biggest draw in the NBA is his appeal as a pick and pop threat, and just his low mistake appeal. He’s not going to be a rim protecting threat, is still going to be over-matched by longer, more athletic big men, and that right there sounds like more of a player to consider at the end of the lottery, or the mid-first round than anyone I’d sign up to turn around my franchise.

I wouldn’t be surprised if his production in the leagued looked similar to Zaza Pachulia.

But the fact he has scored double digits in all but 3 games (one of which was a 50 point blowout win where he only played 19 minutes) is impressive. College ball is not always kind to traditional centers because gaurds will swarm them and play zone vs them and they dont get too many opportuties to truly go one on one in the post. You mention his struggles vs Oregon , and Oregon is the epitome of an athletic swarming defensive team.

But its the defense where poeltl will really earn his money. He might not be blocking a ton of shots, but he is really good man to down low defensively. Look at the duke game from last years sweet 16 where poeltl went straight up vs jahlil okafor and held him to 6 points in 32 minutes. He also has good mobility and moves his feet well which allows him to help on screens and recover to his man. His d is what should really have the scouts attention. .

 I hear you. As a Celtics fan, he reminds me a lot of Tyler Zeller, but with more length and better D.

The question is how much better. But a taller Tyler Zeller with better D could be a solid starting center, and perhaps more.

In general I feel like a few of the big men are overrated right now: Deyonta Davis, Poeltl, Diamond Stone, Zimmerman, Diallo, Damian Jones (who’s a lot higher on some other mocks). While alot of guards are a bit underrated (Wade Baldwin, Malik Beasley, Monte Morris) are a bit underrated. I expect that to balance out the closer we get to the draft.

 He has been in the top 5 on Aran’s mock board on occasion and has been a solid top 10 choice for a while now. Like the majority of the guys above, I think that Simmons and Ingram are likely locks at 1 and 2 after that things become less clear.

Poetel may not have the upside of other guys in his draft range but he might be a much safer pick, he may not be a superstar but could be a rock solid starting big for a long time. If that is worth a number 3 pick is questionable but a lot will depend who drafts there and what their ends are.

However I could see Poetel having a great chance of going top 5.
