JM40ParticipantAfter watching UK play the other night, I was wondering if any other teams could actually pull off the platoon system. Here are a few teams that "might" be able to;
Kansas:
Blue Platoon
PG-Frank Mason III
SG-Wayne Selden
SF-Kelly Oubre
PF-Perry Ellis
C-Jamari Traylor
Red Platoon
PG-Devonte Graham
SG-Brannen Greene
SF-Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk
PF-Cliff Alexander
C-Landen Lucas
Duke (I would split Cook and Jones so each platoon has a PG):
Blue Platoon
PG-Tyus Jones
SG-Rasheed Sulaimon
SF-Justise Winslow
PF-Amile Jefferson
C-Jahlil Okafor
White Platoon
PG-Quinn Cook
SG-Matt Jones
SF-Grayson Allen
PF-Semi Ojeleye
C-Marshall Plumlee
Texas:
Orange Platoon
PG-Isaiah Taylor
SG-Demarcus Holland
SF-Jonathan Holmes
PF-Connor Lammert
C-Cameron Ridley
White Platoon
PG-Javan Felix
SG-Kendal Yancy
SF-Jordan Barnett
PF-Myles Turner
C-Prince Ibeh
North Carolina:
Light Blue Platoon
PG-Marcus Paige
SG-JP Tokoto
SF-Justin Jackson
PF-Brice Johnson
C-Kennedy Meeks
White Platoon
PG-Nate Britt
SG-Joel Berry
SF-Theo Pinson
PF-Desmond Hubert
C-Joel James

King CaluchaParticipantI think this is the only NBA team who should use this. Since there isn’t any real superstar in that team and pretty much everyone’s on the same level. They could get away with it. There’s no problem if anybody gets tired from running.
Run n gun… light Grinnell style

TalentSearchParticipantThere isn’t a team in the nation with talent that compares to UK.
Cal almost has to do this. Those teams you named are good but the platoon would be so less effective.
Because of drastic drops in talent. Each of UK’s lineups are lineups that complement each other, others are just 5 more players.

ropeParticipantYears ago Dean Smith and UNC used a variation on the platoon. For several minutes each game he would substitute the “blue team” – none stars or even potential starters. They would come in for a few minutes as a unit and play their backsides off. Dante Exum’s dad – Cecil – was one of the blue team staples.
Platooning can work and it does’t have to be stars on each unit. My thought, though, is that young players can play a large portion of a 40 minute game without a lot of physical trouble. Given that most teams have a couple of go to players and not a bench full of them, it really does benefit you to have your best guys out there all the time.
My thoughts on the Kentucky system are pretty positive. If the players can get over measuring their own performance via stats and – maybe – set a goal of shutting out the other team while their unit is on the floor, this could be really effective.
Remember, as well, when Pitino was at UK, he ran a very deep bench to keep up the pace he wanted to play at. It worked then and it was on teams led by guys like John Pelphrey. It really ought to be effective with guys like Towns, Cauley Stein, the Harrisons, etc.

properbreaksParticipantPeople are going coocooo over Kentucky! Even the ESPN commentators. I heard someone compare them to UNLV in the early 90s. (cracking up laughing) They would stand a 50 percent chance of getting blown out by 20 or more by the Rebels.
They can Platoon for a while, as in most of the first half and some of the second half, but to me it would be ridiculous to do it a whole year. It’ll help them be super aggressive on defense, but that second untit would go thru some real long droughts on offense. THe coaches aren’t going to look at them struggling for 4 or 5 minutes and have the Harrison twins and Towns on the sideline with them watching the game too…0 - Posted on: Sat, 11/22/2014 - 8:25am #956636

RUDEBOY_Participantits true that kansas and north carolina both have at least 5 or more guys that might be in the nba 1 day…along with several guys that might become good college players…they can also use a platoon system to even out the minutes..
but what makes kentucky so unique is the size, length, versatility and amount of talent on their frontline…i doubt if we’ve ever seen that before in college ball….

HitsterParticipantPhoenix have a fairly deep bench and no real star player so could they do it I wonder?
The idea is a fairly unique one but could be really interesting if one unit was used as a short sharp burst unit, playing less time but going all out during that time.
I wonder if UK are just so deep this year Coach Cal has decided this way is easier than trying all the different permutations to see who works best in what line up.
