Is it possible that the NBA likes tanking? Sounds farfetched right?

There is so many easy, viable ways to stop it. I’ve read many good ones on this site. After all, no-one wants to see their team be uncompetitive. But the League does nothing.

Then it dawned on me….they don’t care if no-ones watching uncompetitive games. Die-hards will still watch and attend games if they can, but this is OK because these are the fans that spend the most money on NBA related items in their domestic market.

I believe that for every $1 the NBA makes from a fan watching on their local broadcaster, they make $5 if that same fan decides to watch the Cavs vs the Warriors on ESPN. They’d rather 90% of fans watching one game, as opposed to 10% each watching 10 different games.

They aren’t afraid of fans suddenly not liking the NBA..and would still come out ahead on average if a small % of fans choose to watch nothing.

 

The league splits the revenue, which means tanking teams arent really any worse off.

And by tanking hard, they’re setting themselves up to be the next iteration of the GSW, and roles are reversed. 

Am I crazy? Do you at least acknowledge that more money is made by having the large majority watching 1 marquee matchup?

 If the league really didn’t care about tanking then Adam Silver wouldn’t have made the Sixers bring in Colangelo.  Apparently owners around the league weren’t happy that whenever Philly came to their arena they had the lowest attendance numbers which also lead to the lowest ticket prices.

Umm that doesn’t endorse tanking.  Obviously they are going to play the most marketable games on ESPN.

 No, the NBA does not like tanking.  It makes the NBA less competitive, not good.  Revenue falls, not good.  And it kind of gives the league a black eye, not good.  I understand what you’re saying, I just don’t think it’s a valid argument.
