What Arvydys Sabonis could have been in his prime in the NBA. Both 7’3”. Both shooters. Both post players. Both high IQ. Both decent defenders.

Sabonis seems like he was a bit quicker of a jumper (quick twitch athlete). He was also a bit thicker at the same age, but Zinger is adding muscle well. By the end of his career, Sabonis was a much better passer, but Porzingis has the IQ to get there.

Not that we need a comparison for Porzingis, but it is kinda’ fun to try to find one.

He’s a player of his own ilk. It’s fun to try to make comparisons, but at this point I think it’s safe to say there really hasn’t been a player who is very similar to him. A lot of people compare him to Dirk, but Dirk is probably the better shooter, and Porzingis is a far better defender. No player I have ever seen combines the physical attributes (7’3), athletisicm, shooting ability, and defensive ability of KP. I am by no means saying he is guaranteed to be a perennial allstar, but he is a different archetype of player who I’m sure we will try to compare future up-and-comers to.

If you never never seen a player like this, it is because you didn’t see a 19 – 25 year old Sabonis.  He was 7′ 3", gangly, athletic and could do anything you asked him.  You can find highlights of some of the slams he had in international play.  They look like the KP highlight you see now.  To me the comparison is legit and not ust because they are both big white guys.

I know the size is a little different but they are both bigs/7 footers. Kevin Garnett is my comparison. Pozingis dosen’t quite match KG intensitiy but nobody does so who cares. He crashes the offensive boards like KG did in his prime. Great shooting stroke and can block shots like KG. I think its good if he stays skinny or about 230 to 240. It allows him to move better, being so damn long i don’t want him getting that goofy big guy syndrome. Definetely can’t defend as good as KG but still can be close. He is offensive minded and finds plays to make a difference.

Arvydas is a very good comparison i thought the same my self. HOwever, i really see a lot of Kirilenko in his game, aside from the fact kirilenko is 6 foot 9 and Prozingis is 7 foot 3. But they are both good 3 point shooters, can hit the mid range, active on defense block shots and alter them, distrupt passing lanes, athletic and got a good IQ. If you think about it he really has many qualitites like Kirilenko.

Sabonis was an absolute freak of nature in his prime so to even draw comparisons to him is pretty high praise. Porzingis is already better than both Garnett and nowitski were at the same age and he is still only scratching the surface of his potential. Think about that for a second.

“Porzingis is already better than both Garnett and nowitski were at the same age and he is still only scratching the surface of his potential. Think about that for a second.”

May be he is better than both at same age ,but that could mean very little .players career doesn’t come to their rookie season at all .Dirk had very poor rookie year and he was one of the best scorer of All-time to say at least . KG is a legend himself
I still remember Tyreke Evans rookie year and being the 4th player ever to average 20-5-5 after Oscar,MJ & Lebron and only Lebron was younger at his rookie year.safe to say he didn’t end at same level of those guys in his seventh year

Don’t get me wrong ,I do really like Porzingis and think he has at least All-Star potential with possibly even MVP potential too
But I am the kind of guy who prefer to take comparisons slowly ,let him be All-Star 1st b4 saying he can be better than 2 of arguably the best 5 PFs of all-time

Sabonis was smoother in the post and had amazing vision for passing.  I disagree with this comp. I think Sampson is a better comp.

He does not play like Ralph Sampson at all.  Watched him in HS, college and the pros. The main place that Sampson would have on KP is a post game.  He was a classic back to the basket center until Hakeem showed up.  He had some of the skills that KP is showing, but not all of them.  For one, Sampson didn’t have a lot of "spring" in his step.

What I hope is that his body doesn’t take the Sampson route.  The suspension on a 7′ 3" frame is a risky proposition.  I want to see this kid play for awhile.

Both amazing players, though.  If you like basketball, these are the kind of guys you want to watch.

I was thinking about Sabonis in terms of KP, but the biggest difference is passing ability. Sabonis is up there with Divac and Gasol in terms of BBIQ and Passing Ability for big men. Also Sabonis banged in the post with guys like Shaq, that old-school style of basketball; KP’s game fits the new school era of big men, but in terms of ability he doesn’t have that physicality level that a guy like Sabonis had… that versatility is what makes him probably the best Euro big of all-time (better than Dirk I believe).
