Meditated StatesParticipantNew Orleans should just give him his team and send Paul on his way. Cp3 is not going to stay with this team why get nothing for him like Clevland and Toronto. I know they got 1st round pics, but that is starting over. They can get a lot for Paul wich could make them a solid team. Collison was a triple double threat consistently when starting. Should they stop being in denial and just trade cp3? Any chance they are better defensively with Collison, and that fact is being underestimated?

Michael.S.ParticipantNo. If you trade CP3 to replace him with Collison you are making a big mistake. Collison played well his rookie season but he is overhyped now. Unless they get a great offer for Paul then don’t move him just for the heck of it.

llperezif im new orleans and cp3 says he is in any way interested in staying, then i keep him and trade collison. And thats coming from a big collison fan. But paul is the best pg in the league in my book and only way he goes is if he wants out and im afraid ill lose him for nothing.
Basically that puts the hornets in a position where they either trade DC now while his stock is high and they could use dc in order to get help for paul and make pual happier. Or they wait till after the next season and see how paul is feeling then as well as get another year to evaluate if dc is in fact worthy of being the long term starter.

TC_42ParticipantI think they have to convince Paul to see how some of the season goes. If it isn’t working, then you have to trade him or this is just going to be a cancer. Not necessarily Paul, just the situation.
He’s 3rd all time in career assist average, and you don’t just trade him away because you have a great backup. You have to give it a trial run and if it doesn’t work, then get a lot back for him in return, give the reigns to Collison, and go from there.
Simple as that (IMO).

flybobbyflyParticipantIf they trade Paul and the team still loses the GM would be in big trouble. the whole city of new orleans loves paul. try to justify trading him away to them.

NashyMingParticipantWhat the Hornets should do is to try to trade Paul now when his value is still high, with a few teams making a run, they can potentially get 90 cents on a dollar.
However, what I think they would do is to have Paul to play the 1st half of the season and see. They should also keep Collison just in case if they change their mind if the season does not start off well. If it does work out, great, then they can trade Collison for more pieces to build around Paul. This can potentially keep Paul from demanding a trade. However, I can hardly see the Hornets to pull of a good enough trade to upgrade the Hornets enough for Paul to stay beyond his current contract.
If it does not work out, then they may trade Paul for 70 cents on a dollar. However, it is likely that they will drag on further and make the same mistake as the Raptors (keeping a super star that does not want to stay for far too long).

dwat4444ParticipantThey have 2 Options:1 build a contending team around Paul(trade Peja’s 15mil expiring for some quality)
2: Rebuild, get draft picks and youth while not taking on any contracts over 7 million(follow OKC model)0 - Posted on: Tue, 07/27/2010 - 10:30am #363659
McWinningParticipantThey best possibly thing that could happen to them is if they manage to pack Peja, Collison, two first rounder, and Brackins.
For Danny Granger.
Not sure hes on the market but think about it.
Paul
Thorton
Granger
West
OkaforThats a very good team.

TC_42ParticipantIs that too much for Granger?
I like a Collison package for Granger though. Indiana might want to see if George can really score first before they give Granger up.

ghettosermonParticipantNow would be the time to trade Paul. Next year you won’t get great offers because no team will give you a blockbuster for a possible one year rental.

ShekiruBoomParticipantJust because a player asks for a trade doesn’t mean you have to trade him. Look at Kobe a couple of years ago. He wanted a trade but the Lakers continued to build around him by adding Pau Gasol and now they are 2 time champions. I think a smarter approach will be to go for it now. Maybe package Darren and Peja to get a Pau Gasol like piece. Make no mistake. Darren Collison is not gonna go out there and put up CP3 like stats. Besides its not even clear if Chris Paul really wants to get traded yet since apparently a couple of days after he requested a trade, he said he like the direction of the Hornets lol.

Meditated StatesParticipantBut sometime you have to pull the trigger. I can see starting the season off and seeing where it goes then trade, but you get more for him if teams don’t view you as desperate.

Malik-UniversalParticipanti really think paul knows the hornets arent goin to get any better, and is in denial. the hornets need to trade him now or wait for a sign and trade when his contract expires if he agrees to one

canesboy6ParticipantIm with Scout on this one. New Orleans needs to realize that Paul is gone in 2 years, no 2 ways around it. He will go to the Magic and team up with Dwight. The Hornets can
1. Keep Paul and be better for 2 years then they would be without him, good enough to maybe sneak into the playoffs but not a tiny bit better IMO 2
2. Sit on Paul and see what they can get at the All Star Break
3. Get rid of thier worst contract, either Okafor or Peja, Trade Paul now, and get some good young assets and a clear financial picture moving forward. Follow the OKC model. Impatience doesnt always make things happen faster. They have a decent young Backcourt with DC and Thornton, they will land something good for Paul, and get a few nice lotto picks. You’re going to have to do it in 2 years anyways, might as well plan a way to maximize what you get for losing him rather than sell your soul in a futile effort to keep him, leaving you screwed when you inevitably can’t. (ask cavs and raptors fans how smart that makes you feel)

JPBrayParticipantWhy don’t they package Collison with Okafor’s contract to get something. Maybe a team in need of a pg would come up with some talent. Maybe Collison and Okafor for Granger. Then use Peja’s expiring deal to get talent from a team looking to shed payroll. Maybe Evan Turner blows up and Philly decides to part with Iggy. Then they just need to find a center to play defense around Paul, Iggy, Granger and West. They got the pieces to trade for something, just gotta get the owner to spend the money

B-ball fanParticipantPaul is the best pg in the league. Try to get rid of Peja Stojakovic and/or Okafor and build around Paul. If they get some talent in return they can build around Paul and have a good team in a couple of years.
@canesboy6: OKC has a franchise player they can build around, plus tons of talent. NO shouldn’t let Paul leave, as they are highly unlikely to get a player of his caliber again. If he leaves via trade or free agency, they still will be lightyears away from being a championship contender.

NashyMingParticipantLakers got the money to upgrade…
The Hornets? They are trying to cut budget.
I think the biggest reason they are keeping Paul was for the ticket sale.
In reality, there is no chance for the current Hornets to be talking championship. It’s near impossible for them to even reach playoff.
There are not too many realistic trade out there that can help Hornets significantly improve while not making their finance suffer even more. I doubt the Hornets ownership would have the money to pull a “Pau Gasol” type of deal, so the best route is still to trade Chris Paul for 90 cents on the dollar now.
I doubt they would do it though.

PlatypusParticipantJPBray – Iggy aint gettin dealt like that Brand would be involved.
i honestly pray as a Hornets fan that this the trade they do
Collison, Okafor, Songailla, and Wright and 2 first round picks and 2 2nd round picks (of opposite years of the 1st rounders) for Granger, Hibbert, Foster, and Aj Price
Collison – Ford
Stephenson – Jones
George – Rush – Dunleavey
Murphy – Wright – Hansbrough
Okafor – Songailla – JonesPaul – Price
Thorton – Pondexter
Granger – Posey
West – Brackins
Hibbert – Foster – GrayPeja and Posey then traded for Rip Hamilton and Posey (pistons do it to get more cap space and lose rips contract)
Paul – Price
Hamilton – Thorton
Granger – Prince
West – Brackins
Hibbert – Foster – GrayIt all a dream, but as Biggie said “the sky is the limit”
