NashyMingParticipantCoaching in the NBA is a very tough job. You are dealing with a bunch of millionaires that may or may not listen to you, while your job is based on if these guys actually execute your plan (although your plan may not even work to begin with). The coach is also usually in the position to be blamed on for anything that goes wrong. I personally think a bad GM can do much more damage to a franchise than a bad coach and yet a bad GM would usually fire the coach first thing and blame his incompetence on the coach.
A lot of coaches did not even get the chance to right the ship and was axed. It gives another reason for players to disrespect their coach if things don’t go the way they want because they know the coach would be gone once they turned off on him and the GM would act.
I think the GM should not fire the coach so quickly (obviously, they would have to be smart when hiring the coach), they should give them enough power and security to show the players that he’s the boss. That’s the only way for coach to gain respect from the players. If the coach can be wipped like a sissy, then the players would not respect him, and that would only result in constantly changing coaches, which happens to most losing franchise.
