On Saturday I watched the last 1.2 seconds of the Baylor-Texas game when Baylor had a 3 point lead and the clock was stopped.

OK guys, ask yourself what strategy would you employ during the time out if you were the Baylor head coach. What would you tell your guys to do on defense? I know what my instructions would be and that wasn’t what happened.

Remember, you’re up by 3 points with 1.2 seconds remaining so a 2 point field goal is meaningless.

In light of that situation, why would any of your players be in the lane playing defense under the basket when a layup cannot hurt you? I would put all 5 players above the 3 point line, making it next to impossible to get off an open 3 point shot.

Of course I would remind them, No Stupid Fouls on a 3 point shooter!

Baylor didn’t do what I described above as they had 3 players standing in the lane while Texas had the ball out of bounds. After the ball was in bounded, one of those three Baylor players, who was standing in the lane, ran out to guard against the 3 point shot, but it was too late as the guy got off a decent shot beyond the arc. Baylor was lucky because the Texas player missed the shot, but their defensive strategy was less than brilliant.

I don’t know if the coach gave poor instructions or if the players failed to listen to his instructions.

I would tell my guys to play up close and if they start to drive or back up foul them so they can’t take the three. Do not under any condition foul them on a three atempt. No need for a Larry Johnson come back.

the I in win, although I like the idea of fouling and giving up 2 foul shots instead of a 3 point attempt, you can’t do that in this scenario where there is only 1.2 seconds remaining on the clock. With that limited amount of time, any player who receives a pass will simultaneously go up for a shot. The last thing you want to do is foul an opponent in the act of attempting a 3 point shot.

I think you need at least 3-5 seconds to go for the grab and hold option.
